Hi,

My Acer Aspire 1800 laptop only starts up when the battery is in. When the laptop starts up the "power light" and "battery loading light" turn on. In Windows I can see the battery is loading so the AC Adaptor and the AC plug on the motherboard seem to be ok.

Is there anyone who can tell me how I can solve this problem ?

Thanks !!

A short, practical diagnosis and next steps based on 's report (and the suggestions from and ).

The behaviour — the machine only powers when the main battery is fitted — is a common symptom with three broad root causes: a dead/weak battery that the machine needs as a startup buffer, a faulty DC-in/charging path (jack, wiring or charging MOSFETs), or a motherboard power‑sequencing/EC fault. The charger showing activity in Windows or an LED illuminating does not by itself prove the motherboard is receiving the correct rail voltages at power‑up.

Suggested diagnostic checklist (in order):

  • Confirm battery-only boot: unplug AC and confirm the laptop boots and runs from the battery alone.
  • Try AC-only after an EC reset: remove battery and AC, hold the power button 20–30 seconds, plug AC in (no battery) and attempt power-on.
  • Measure the adapter: check the adapter label for its rated DC voltage and confirm that voltage at the barrel with a multimeter (DC volts). If available, measure at the battery connector on the motherboard with the battery removed — charger voltage should be present there when AC is plugged in.
  • Swap parts if possible: try a known-good compatible AC adapter or a known-good battery to isolate which component fails.
  • Inspect the DC jack and connector: check for wobble, corrosion, or broken solder joints which can pass charging current but fail under startup conditions.

If charger voltage is present at the barrel but not at the battery connector, the fault is in the jack/charging circuit. If proper voltages are present everywhere yet the laptop still refuses to start on AC alone, the power-sequencing circuitry (board-level) is likely faulty and will need component-level repair or board replacement.

Safety and next steps: mains testing and board work require basic electrical safety and ESD precautions. If a simple adapter swap or battery test is not possible, professional repair is recommended. and were right to suspect the battery — however, confirming with the checks above avoids an unnecessary purchase.

Which battery do you mean ?

You have inside your computer a battery this one can be charged with the adapter...

From your description, it's already dead.
