Short, practical guidance for locating a Compaq Presario 700 service/technical manual and safe alternatives when an official manual is hard to find.

Start by identifying the exact product number printed on the underside sticker or inside the battery bay. That product number (not just "Presario 700") is the single most useful string for searches on vendor and archive sites. Check HP Support (https://support.hp.com) first, then the Internet Archive for old Compaq/HP support pages (https://web.archive.org). Third‑party manual aggregators and repair sites such as ManualsLib (https://www.manualslib.com) and iFixit (https://www.ifixit.com) sometimes host scans or teardown notes for legacy laptops.

When an official service manual is not available, practical repair workflow matters more than a specific document. Photograph every step before removing parts, label screw types and their bays, keep ribbon connectors aligned and unlocked when removing them, and always disconnect battery and AC power first. Grounding/ESD precautions are essential. For common fixes on old Presarios, focus on easily replaceable items first (memory modules, hard drive, keyboard ribbon, CMOS battery) and use donor parts or verified part numbers when sourcing replacements.

This thread shows pointed toward general guides and later resolved the immediate problem. For long‑term reference, combine a targeted product‑number search on HP/archives with general laptop teardown procedures from reputable repair sites, and use photos and careful labeling to avoid reassembly problems.

There are not any. Use a general laptop repair guide, such as those availble on Amazon.com

cheers but no worries now I worked it out and sorted it. i just prefer to get a manual if i can for those little pecadilloes that go with some of the more proprietary kit
