the easiest way to check the capacitors is to look at them, when they have overheated the top will "dome" and split, you will see where they have leaked. by the way a capacitor can take a major battering and still work, I've seen motherboards with several blown still functioning. …

could try checking the thermal paste on the proscessor. if it's heavily used this will take a pasting (appologies for the bad pun) and may need replacing. laptop proscessors tend to run hot due to the lack of available cooling/airflow and maybe hitting it's cuttout temp.

morally (i'm not religious) i believe it's wrong to take another life practically wrong because too many mistakes have been made in the past and 20/20 hindsight is no good when the switch has been pulled

the soraci virus also causes machines to "loop" on boot. this can be sorted by connecting the hard drive to another machine as a slave(set the drive's jumpers accordingly), set the bios to see it then don't open it but scan it with a good virus scanner to sort any …

i'd reconnect the drive then go onto the bios and check that it's set to see the drive on primary master. i don't see how the dell guy can tell if the drive is dead without running a good diagnostic tool to test it. i believe dell use ibm/hitachi you …

You can quite happily install SQL 2008 R2 Express, Though I would ensure you get the with tools installer. It will support up to 10Gb. Though you will not get SQl Agent functionality.

If it's a brand new laptop and you've done nothing significant to it. Back up any stored data and return it under warranty. However I would suggest first uninstalling any software you have put on it just to be sure that it's not a conflict with something you put in. …

you can still clear the cmos by disconnecting the cmos battery and then shorting the contacts on the battery connector this will have the same effect as jumpers would, however you must remove the laptop battery and power supply first or it will not work.

Taskmanager is effectively a small standalone app. have a look at C:\windows\system32 see if you can find taskmgr.exe If it is missing, you can copy the executable from any windows xp pc and paste it back into system32 on your pc.

sounds like the phone line is just a coincidence, i think you have a loose connection in the VGA cable so you're only getting one or two colour signals. try another screen/cable you know to be good, or replace the cable if poss.
