I'm really going crazy here and could use some advice. Running XP Home edition, installed McAfee security suite including virus scan, firewall, spam killer etc., and consequently can't browse using My Computer or Explorer. Just receive the 'Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close' error message.

Error details given as follows:
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: msvcrt.dll
ModVer: 7.0.2600.2180 Offset: 00037fd4

Installed SP2 in the hope that may sort it out but to no avail.

Then uninstalled McAfee and hey presto, browsing fine - but no security. Re-installed and same problem. Seems to me there just may be a conflict going on. Checked for viruses and none detected so presumably not that.

I'd be really grateful for a simple solution to this. Thanks, Mart :-|

Download then unzip and run CWShredder to clean up clicking "FIX" to have it remove all it finds.

CWShredder available from these places :-

http://www.aluriasoftware.com/tools/cwshredder.zip
Or this as a full download without any unzipping required
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe

We have found that some of the CWS infections can be removed better from safe mode, rather than normal mode.
To get to safe mode use the F8 key while booting the machine. Detailed instructions from here :-

Then please do this since it’s better to use automated tools to get rid of the bad stuff use these 2 programs first before doing the final cleaning with HJT

First use Spybot S&D. (Version 1.3)
Spybot
Unzip, and update. Install the updates and run. Delete all that it marks in red.
Reboot

Then it’s time for Ad-Aware
Ad-Aware
Install and update by using the globe icon. Restart your computer and run Ad-Aware.
Press scan now and select drives and/or partitions to be scanned. When done select all and click next. Remove all checked items and then reboot your computer.

Please go to this page and read the instructions for how to configure Spybot S&D & Ad-Aware
How To Setup Spybot SD and Ad-Aware

Then post a HJT log as a reply to this topic.

CJ You are a truly remarkable person and you have made my life worth living again.

All that took several long ponderous hours as I'm sure I don't have to tell you, but it's sorted the little horrors out and I'm eternally grateful.

Your humble admirer

Mart :cheesy:

This is the new HJT log btw. Hope it looks a bit healthier. Don't blame you if you're not disposed to trawl through it again though. You've saved me from sheer misery and frustration so what more could I ask?
