Hello.

I have installed Norton FireWall on antoher Compaq computer (norton firewall came with the computer). It all seemed to install well, and when I restarted the computer, we hit problems.

The computer boots, and loads the desktop image, and then stops. IE. It doesnt load the desktop, just the images behind it.

The PC is a Compaq, Cleleron processer running Win XP Home. We are pretty sure the firewall is the problem as that is all that was changed.

Any help would be nice.

Jason.

Short, practical plan that follows 's Safe Mode suggestion and keeps 's fallback (vendor support) in mind.

  1. Try a non-destructive boot first: repeatedly press F8 during startup and choose "Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)". If that restores normal startup, uninstall the problematic product from Add or Remove Programs.

  2. If not, boot to Safe Mode (F8 -> Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking). In Safe Mode:

    • Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, open Task Manager, File -> New Task (Run...) and type explorer.exe. If the shell appears, use Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs to uninstall the firewall.
    • If explorer won't start, run System Restore (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore) and pick a restore point before the install.
  3. If uninstall fails or leaves remnants, use the official Norton removal utility from Symantec (search for "Norton Remove and Reinstall" on Norton Support). Run that from Safe Mode with Networking if possible, then reboot.

  4. If the machine still will not reach the desktop:

    • Use msconfig in Safe Mode to disable non-Microsoft services and startup items (hide Microsoft services first), reboot and re-enable items one at a time.
    • As a last recovery step, consider a Repair Install or use recovery media after backing up personal data.

Notes and cautions: do not manually delete program files or registry keys unless experienced — that can make recovery harder. Keep the product/version information to hand if contacting Symantec support. If none of these steps work, a technician with the system and recovery media on hand will be the safest route.

You should talk to the Symantec Support Hotline. They are the ones that make a lot of cash with this garbage.
