I am new, and don't know much about computers. I am having problems with my gateway laptop. When I click on standby, shutdown or hibernate from the start shutdown window, nothing happens. I have to hold down the power button to get it to shut off. Any suggestions?

A Temporary solution :
Open Command Prompt (open Start/Run and type 'cmd' and press 'Enter')
1) To Shutdown the pc :
Type the following in the command prompt window :
shutdown.exe -s -f
2) To Restart :
shutdown.exe -r -f
3) To LogOff :
shutdown.exe -l -f
