I've just bought a new laptop for my wife and the wireless connection is not good and keeps failing even the same room as the router, so she spends her time connected to the router by the LAN cable which is unsatisfactory. I'm in the next room through a thick stone wall and get moderate reception on my old computer running XP with an external Belkin wireless card. I thought channel 11 normally works best but Infrastucture defaults to channel 4.

once they were more adaquatley cooled all worked as well as in the next room!

You should be able to select any available channel through the router set up page. 1, 6, 11 are standard.
Check for a router firmware update.
