Everybody has been going crazy about how teh hax0rz have cracked vista registration, and throughout the whole process, Microsoft has been promising to shore up every last one.
The problem with shoring up cracks and ensuring security, is the reduction in service. If the KVL server crack is shored up, the companies who buy KVL liscences of vista will have to jump through an extra hoop to get it working. This is more costly to maintain as well, and less productive for the company.
And for the current bios crack for registration, if that is blocked, it risks denying service to all the cusomers who bought a pre-registered computer already, and hinders manufacturers ability to load and register vista on thier products.
It also doesn't help that Microsoft is constantly insisting that vista can't be cracked. It almost instantly guarantee's that it will be. Hell, they've even got all of us here at DT working on tearing down DRM. Why? Because we can. And I don't believe in content protection and trusted computing, but that discussion is for another day.
There are holes in every program, especially one the size and complexity of an OS. Every programmer knows this. Why can't microsoft see that these boasting tactics are just making things worse for them? It probably wouldn't have prevented the crack from being found at all, but it would probably have taken a lot longer. Also, the amount of pirated copies of windows vs the amount of legally purchased copies would go down if Microsoft would just hush up on the whole issue and go about thier money-grubbing business. All this 'Vista is unhackable' talk is making the cracks that come through all the more popular with the tech savvy subculture.
