I have Windows XP Pro. Defragmenting is aborted due to inconsistencies in files. Running scandisk and chkdsk is ineffective. Help!

i raely if ever defrag,what problems are you having that you feel the need to defrag

Put in your windows disk and cancel the install window when it pops up then go to run and type: sfc /scannow
hit enter this will check the windows system files and may resolve the situation. if not try downloading defraggler from the ccleaner website and use that.
However from the sounds of things I would suggest a clean install as soon as you can.
