The combination of a persistent "hard disk space ... need to clean or format the drive" popup plus registry errors usually means one of two things: rogue scareware/advertisingware that fakes system alerts, or a genuine file‑system / disk health issue that is confusing Windows. The badly worded popup in the first post is a strong red flag for a fake alert; real Windows warnings are formatted differently and reference the drive letter and system source.

Good points in the thread: was right to recommend malware checking. suggested a registry cleaner — that approach is risky. Third‑party registry cleaners often remove entries that break Windows. Prefer diagnostics and built‑in repairs first, and always back up the system/registry before any automatic cleanup.

Practical diagnostic checklist (order matters):

  • Identify what actually uses the space with a folder‑size scanner run as administrator (examples: WinDirStat or TreeSize Free).

  • Show hidden and protected OS files and check for large system files: hiberfil.sys, pagefile.sys, and the System Volume Information folder (shadow copies).

  • Inspect shadow storage:

    vssadmin list shadowstorage

If shadow copies are consuming the drive and restore points are expendable:

    vssadmin delete shadows /for=C: /all

(Warning: this removes restore points permanently.)

  • Disable hibernation to remove hiberfil.sys if appropriate:

    powercfg -h off
  • Repair file system and system files:

    chkdsk C: /f /r
    sfc /scannow

These may require a reboot and administrative privileges.

  • Run up‑to‑date full antivirus/anti‑malware scans including an offline rescue/rootkit scan. If the popup is non‑native (bad grammar, unusual UI), treat it as rogue and use an offline rescue environment.

Final notes: back up important data immediately before extensive repairs. If SMART or CHKDSK reports failing sectors, migrate data and replace the drive. If malware removal still leaves registry errors, prefer a repair install or fresh OS install over random registry cleaners.
