The Windows 7 is a trial run due to lock out in 3 days.
how can I quickly do away with it and install my genuine Vista in its stead?

Thank you all in advance

: a Windows 7 evaluation cannot be "uninstalled" in place. The practical options are restoring a factory Vista image (if the PC originally shipped with Vista) or performing a clean Vista install from genuine Vista media. was right to flag data preservation first; assume files are already secured before any reinstall.

Pre-install checklist: confirm a valid Vista product key (COA sticker or original paperwork) and that the installation media matches the Vista edition and architecture. Check for an OEM recovery partition or recovery discs first — using the OEM recovery is usually fastest and restores vendor-supplied drivers. If there is no recovery media, obtain the correct retail or OEM Vista DVD/ISO for the matching edition.

Driver and hardware pitfalls to plan for: modern storage, RAID and wireless components often lack Vista drivers. Download Vista drivers for chipset, storage controller and network adapters from the PC maker and copy them to a USB stick prior to setup. Vista setup allows loading third-party drivers during installation (older installers used F6 with a floppy; Vista shows a Load Driver option). If the installer fails to see the hard disk, switching the SATA mode in BIOS from AHCI to IDE/Compatibility can let the install proceed (note: this can reduce performance).

Activation and risk: use the exact key for the matching edition; OEM recovery may auto-activate. Windows Vista reached end of support on April 11, 2017, so no more security updates are available — running Vista online is a security risk. For legacy apps that require Vista but that must remain secure, consider running Vista in a virtual machine on the current Windows 7 host so the host stays supported while legacy software remains available.

Manufacturer support pages for the specific model contain the exact recovery keystrokes and driver downloads needed for the cleanest, fastest restore.

If you are needing to retain your information, I'd advise you to backup your data to another drive. Uninstall all your registered software. If you cannot get an external drive, partition the hard drive to your file size and move those files over. Install Vista. Once installed, move all the files back over and repartition your drives. I recommend Hiren's Boot CD in order to do this. It is totally free. :)
