A compact, practical checklist to address both the missing Microsoft Works Start‑Menu entries and the ActiveX errors reported in this thread (building on ’s note about scanning and ’s comment about replies).

First confirm the program actually installed on disk by looking for the Works folder and executables, then check the Start Menu locations:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\

If the program files exist but no shortcuts are present, create one from the main .exe (right‑click → Create Shortcut or Send To → Desktop), then move that shortcut into the All Users or user Start Menu Programs folder (Start → Explore All Users on XP makes this easy). If available, run the Works installer again and choose Repair/Modify or uninstall and reinstall while logged in as an Administrator and select any “install for all users” option.

ActiveX errors during McAfee/Norton setup are commonly caused by a broken Internet Explorer/ActiveX environment or by malware. Avoid small web/ActiveX installers: download the vendor’s full offline installer and run that. Run System File Checker to repair core OS files:

sfc /scannow

(Requires admin rights and possibly the XP CD). If problems persist, re‑register key IE/ActiveX DLLs (advanced), verify the Windows Installer service is running, and perform an offline malware scan or use a rescue CD if the system won’t accept AV installs. If these steps are unfamiliar, vendor support or Dell’s support line can provide guided help.

check it .. have you ever scanned your computer for spyware trojans viruses( i understand you tryd to download these??), and are you downloading from the internet or do you have disks...??

Other people will see your message and click "post reply" just as you have replied and I am replying now.

When you say it only goes into your Add/Remove programs, does that mean that it is not in the Start Menu? Does the Installation complete and say that it was successful?
