Tried the link again first, but results were the same.
When I followed the above instructions and clicked on
sfc /scsnnow
nothing really happened.
There was a brief flash like you get when you engage chk disc.
Still receiving original error message from Microsoft.

just rereading and noticed a typo on my part with this info .my laptop keyboard needs to be replaced ,one day .

anyway ,it should be .
"sfc /scannow" with out the " of course ,not sfc /scsnnow

Thanks for bringing that to my attention.
Good that you spotted the error.
Windows File Protection Scan is now running.
Will keep you posted.

Didn't report anything back - good or bad!

Having got File Protection Scan working I went back to your first reply and to your first suggested link.
Filehippo took me to a download repair for .Net4
I downloaded this in the hope that it would solve the problems.
The laptop seemed to freeze after this.
Clicking on anything on the desktop did nothing, and moving the cursor to the taskbar, to bring up a window, only produced an eggtimer.
I decided to go into safe mode to do a system restore.
That has just finished and I will go and see how the system is working and if there are any improvements.

Running very well at the moment.
Event Viewer System shows what seems like millions of events just for today alone.
Majority seem to relate to Secunia Update Agent Service Failed To Start advising that the system cannot find the specified path.
Applications: .Net Framework update could not be installed.
Other Events: MS DTC service stopping.
In spite of all that system is running very well.
Microsoft is permanently waiting in the wings with updates for .Net Framework.
I wonder did I give the repair that I did earlier today sufficient time to take effect.
The system is running far better since system restore, although I only went back a few hours.
I could download the repair from Filehippo again if you think it might help.
Can always do another restore!

or give windows updates another try or 2 .

The usual update KB2416447 failed to install 3 times.
It is the only outstanding update.

1. Ran Clean Up Tool.

2. Installed .Net Framework 1.1

3. Downloaded .Net Framework SP1.
Twice failed to install but succeeded at third attempt.

4. Downloaded and Installed 3.5.
Was asked if I wanted to restart after successful installation and I indicated
in the affirmative.
As I waited for shutdown I was advised that an error had occurred.
Report said: DepCheck indicates that Microsoft .Net Framework 2.O A
is not installed.

I was asked to submit the report which I did, as I was advised that it
could help the service.
That is where it is at at the moment.
I was going to run 3.5 again but as it is getting on for midnight I decided
to leave it for now.
Would appreciate your comments.
T

Many thanks.
Will do that now.
Might have to install 3.5 again.
Will keep you posted.

Machine is currently installing 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .Net Framework 3.5
Family Update for .Net Versions 2.0 through 3.5 KB951847 x86.
Seems to be a very slow process.
Nothing more to report yet.
Just wanted to keep you posted.

Am advised that all updates for .Net Framework have installed.
As it is 1.15am I will need to try to get back to it tomorrow
to see if everything is working OK with .Net Framework and to
check for other system updates.
Thanks for all your time and patience today.
Much appreciated.
Hope to report back at some stage in the latter part of Monday.

All critical updates, including long outstanding one,
appear to have installed.
Optional updates next.
Hope to be back later today.

Looks like everything is done.
Even that long outstanding update.
Must congratulate you on that.
Microsoft said that that could only be done with
a repair install which I dreaded.
Can't believe that this problem is finally sorted after
all this time.
Well done, and thanks a million!
