Short answer: Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (64‑bit) can run SQL Server — the safest choices on that OS are SQL Server 2008 R2 (Developer or Express, x64) or SQL Server 2008 installed with Service Pack 1 (slipstreamed or applied immediately after setup). For SQL Server 2008 non‑Express editions you must use SP1 or later when installing on Windows 7; Express editions already include the needed update. SQL Server 2005 is legacy and only practical if you install the latest 2005 service pack/hotfixes (SP4 and related updates). (learn.microsoft.com)

Common, quick checks when the installer says “OS incompatibility”:

  • Make sure you are running the matching installer for your OS (x64 installer for 64‑bit Windows).
  • Right‑click Setup → Run as administrator.
  • Use SQL Server 2008 R2 Express/Developer x64 (easiest path) or create slipstreamed SQL Server 2008 media that includes SP1; many Windows‑7 install failures are fixed that way. (learn.microsoft.com)
  • Verify .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is enabled (Windows 7 includes it by default, but confirm it is turned on). (learn.microsoft.com)
  • Temporarily disable antivirus/installer blockers, remove any half‑completed SQL installs, and check the setup logs under the SQL Server Bootstrap\Log folder for the first error lines.

Context on earlier replies: and were pointing in the right direction — SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer/Express editions are compatible with Win7. ’s blanket “only on Windows Server” is too strict: server OS is required only for some enterprise features; client editions of Windows (including Home Premium) support Express/Developer and many non‑clustered scenarios. (microsoft.com)

If problems persist, include the exact SQL setup edition/bitness and paste the first failing lines from the Summary/Detail setup log — those lines pinpoint the root cause much faster.

from the below list, anyone:
MS SQL Server 2005
MS SQL Server 2008
MS SQL Server Management Studio 2005
MS SQL Server Management Studio 2008

or any equivalent SQL Server compatible with Windows 7 Home Premium SP-1, 64-bit

You have to buy it or do you want the trial one?

i dont think it will install on Home P, just Ultimate/pro /or enterprise editions. or Windows server most edition ,good luck

edit / lower down the bottom of that link it shows this version and a few othere that work with win7 HP,like QL Server 2008 R2 Developer (64-bit) x64

hi,

I guess if you are ok with Express edition then go for SQL Server 2008 R2 Express x64 (64-bit)

You can only install SQL Server on Windows Server, the developer version can run on Ultimate edition etc... I had to do it for a student project...
