I have a retailplus rp-capu-835 web cam which was working fine on this computer.
This is an xp box with an asus k8v se motherboard.
When I click on "MYComputer" and then click on USB Device #1, which is the camera,
the MyComputer window freezes for about 60 seconds, then the message
"Creation of the video preview failed. Please Check the device connection and make sure that the device is not being used by another application"
While the window is frozen, Explorer.exe service goes up to 100 percent.
This Computer has a bootable second drive as a backup. When I boot with this drive, everything works normally with all the same devices connected. This seems to rule out any hardware problem.
The Camera works fine with Skype on the main drive
Things I have tried so far
uninstalled klite Codec Pac which google searches suggested could be the problem.
Also tried a few related registry tweaks which purported to fix the problem
Ran SFC Scannow to check all windows files
Re registered all Windows files
Removed all video type Apps in case of a conflict
Ran a registry cleaner "Reg Defense'
Disconnected all USB devices, and uninstalled all USB drivers in Device Manager, then let them reinstall
Thanks for any help, even some new approaches to solve this problem.. I dont want to reload Windows except as a last resort.
