time tested means it has been around for a long time and works well.

memtest has been around for ages. It checks your computer memory for inconsistencies and errors and lets you know. click on the link that tinstaafl provided initially and then go through the instructions. It should include the step-by-step process that you are looking for but if it doesn't just simply download it and run the application.
