A short, focused expert note tying together the earlier suggestions from , and and adding practical triage and fixes that weren’t spelled out yet.

First-pass triage (non‑destructive): run Internet Explorer with add‑ons disabled to see whether a helper object or download manager is taking over the link. From Run or a command line:

"%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -extoff

If the download UI (or the “file download” prompt) returns while IE is in No‑Addons mode, the problem is almost always an addon (BHO/toolbar) or a third‑party download manager that hooks the browser; disabling the offending add‑on or turning off the manager’s browser integration usually restores the normal download UI. (learn.microsoft.com)

Settings that commonly change behavior: Internet Options → Security → Custom Level → Downloads. Make sure “File download” and “Automatic prompting for file downloads” are enabled for the appropriate zone (or add the site to Trusted Sites to avoid the Information Bar introduced in XP SP2). Also note that certain HTTPS server headers (Cache‑Control: no‑store / no‑cache) can prevent IE6 from opening downloads even if the UI appears. (support.microsoft.com)

Why a HijackThis log matters and what to watch for: HijackThis output helps identify BHOs, toolbars and autostart entries that often intercept downloads; a complete log (as requested earlier) lets experienced helpers spot those items. Avoid using “Fix checked” on unfamiliar lines without guidance — removing the wrong entry can break things. If malware or unwanted toolbars are suspected, run an up‑to‑date on‑demand scanner (Malwarebytes Toolset/portable scanner is a commonly used option) before making system changes. (pchell.com)

These steps separate policy/security causes from third‑party software hooks and get the download UI visible again in most IE6 cases.

No direct idea (you may have been hijacked), but try this as a test and work-around: right-click on the link and select Save Target As... from the drop-down menu and see if that works. The first thing you should test it on is (for the instructions--you may have to download from one of the listed mirrors). Follow the instructions, and see my article (link below) for more information, then post the log here.

That is an incomplete log.

Please rerun Hijack This and repost, and someone can help you out :)

And do this before you run hijackthis again and then post a new ,full log .

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary.
