I can't seem to load any webpage more than halfway, or if I can, it takes a helluva long time to do so. IE doesn't stop responding, it just sits there like my old 9600 baud used to, only slower. Oddly, my ping to websites, peers, game servers and the like are all uber fast, as usual.

Oh, the irony  I work as a resident network tech on my campus and just finished moving into a new apartment. Before I moved, browsing on my T3 connection was seamless, after I moved it came to a screeching halt. At first I thought it was just the port I was plugged into so I plugged my laptop into it to test but I had no problems, so the problem must be local.

Most of my job entails keeping viruses and spyware off people's computers, so I keep an arsenal of utils handy (spybot, adaware, cwshred, ZoneAlarm, etc), plus Norton Corporate Edition. I've run every anti-spyware program I can think of and tried every little trick suggested in this thread (http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/showthread.php?t=989&page=1&pp=15) all to no avail. Anyone have a clue? I'm so stumped I need to be watered.

Quick summary: the problem was the network adapter's connection-type/negotiation setting on the desktop. Changing the adapter's advanced property to use automatic negotiation restored full browsing speed. This exact symptom — pings and latency look fine while HTTP transfers crawl — often points away from spyware or browser add-ons and toward a layer-2/physical mismatch.

Why it happens: when the NIC and the upstream switch/port disagree about speed or duplex (for example one side forced, the other auto), the link may still appear "up" but will suffer collisions, CRC/frame errors and massive retransmits. Small ICMP pings can still succeed, yet TCP throughput for web pages collapses, making pages stall while the machine looks otherwise responsive.

Practical checklist to help others with the same issue:

  • If another device works on the same jack, suspect the local NIC rather than the network.
  • Check the adapter status for link speed, then set the NIC's advanced Speed/Duplex or Connection-Type option to Auto/Auto-Negotiate (names vary by driver). Avoid forcing mismatched fixed speeds unless you know the switch is fixed.
  • After changing the setting, retest with a large file download or a different browser to rule out application-layer problems.
  • Temporarily disable AV/firewall stream-scanning to rule out content inspection. Cleaning up excessive ActiveX/DPF entries (as suggested) can reduce plugin-related stalls but won’t fix a hardware negotiation issue.
  • Update NIC drivers, try a different cable, and contact the network admin if the switch port is managed or fixed to a particular speed.

Caution: do not change adapter settings on a remote box without console access. Good troubleshooting here: isolating the problem by testing a laptop on the same port narrowed the fault to the desktop NIC.

Fix this one for sure ,but with so many 016's I would fix all just to be sure ,the good ones will come back when you visit the site again .

Hrm, I deleted all the 16s and it might have helped a *tiny* bit but otherwise nothing has changed :/ Any other suggestions? Here's my new log, and thanks for the help:

Aha! Finally figured it out, though at the cost of having an aneurism  Went into network connections > selected conn > properties > configure > advanced > set the Value for Connection Type to AutoSense, worked like a charm. Thanks for all the help though! :p
