Most "decoder needed" messages mean Windows lacks the right DirectShow filter or a licensed DVD decoder; it does not usually require buying a single proprietary decoder. As suggested, identifying the container/extension is the first diagnostic step, and the examples posted by point to two different categories (RealMedia versus DVD-VIDEO), which need different handlers.

The quickest, safest confirmation is to test the files in a player that bundles decoders (for example, VLC Media Player). Success there shows the problem is limited to WMP/system codecs; continued failure points to DRM or corrupt files. Using a bundled player avoids changing system codec registrations and is the least risky first move.

If Windows Media Player 11 must be used, a cleaner approach is better than grabbing random "all-codec" bundles. Although pointed to a codec collection, such packs from unknown hosts can include adware or cause conflicts. The safer route for WMP is: remove conflicting codec packs first, reboot, then install a reputable DirectShow codec package (select custom install and only needed components). For DVD-VIDEO on older Windows installs a licensed DVD decoder may be required; RealMedia typically needs the official RealPlayer or a compatible DirectShow filter. DRM-protected streams will not play without proper authorization.

Security and compatibility notes: avoid anonymous file-host links and unsolicited codec installers; prefer well-known players or established codec distributions; test media in a bundled player before changing system codecs; and remember that the exact remedy depends on the file extension and whether the media came from a DVD or a download.

You very accurately describe the error messages that Windows Media Player gives when it trys to play the video, but you fail to mention the video you're trying to play. Also post the type of video you were trying to play.

As far as I know, you can simply download most decoders for WMP for free. Usually the encoders are what costs the money.

get storm media codecs just do a google search it has all the codecs you will ever need
