A short recap of what's been posted: reported WMP stopped playing files after an update; suggested codecs/alternate players and suggested rolling back. Before replacing the player, try targeted repairs—many XP-era WMP problems come from a corrupted per‑user library, mismatched/registered WMP DLLs, or a third‑party filter/service conflict.

Steps that often fix this (in order of risk):

  1. Stop the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service (Services → stop WMPNetworkSvc), close WMP, then rename or move every *.wmdb file from the per‑user Media Player folder so the library is rebuilt on next start. This resets the player’s database and removes library corruption. (learn.microsoft.com)
  2. Re‑register the player’s DLLs (for example, run an elevated command prompt and execute regsvr32 wmp.dll; other WMP components can be re‑registered the same way) to correct registration mismatches. (support.microsoft.com)
  3. Run the System File Checker to repair protected system files: sfc /scannow. If core WMP files were damaged during the update, SFC will try to restore them. (support.microsoft.com)

If playback still fails, isolate third‑party conflicts:

  • Perform a clean boot (disable non‑Microsoft services/startup) and test WMP; this rules out helper apps or codec/driver installers. (support.microsoft.com)
  • Check the Application log in Event Viewer for faulting module names and event IDs; those details point to the offending DLL or service. Creating a new Windows user account is a quick way to confirm whether the problem is per‑user (library) vs. system‑wide. (pcreview.co.uk)

Note: back up playlists or exported library data before deleting *.wmdb files (those steps clear playlists/library entries). If these targeted repairs fail, Microsoft’s WMP troubleshooting documentation documents additional fixes and diagnostic tools. (support.microsoft.com)

you might need some codecs download the divx codec then the klite mega codec pack and see if that works or just download the new wmplayer 10 from microsoft.com. But i would think it is a codec problem if your video files are avi then you probably need divx or xvid

just downloaded the new windows media player, same thing, even sucks more now because i can't even play a simple mp3. Something is seriously going wrong here. Please help me out. Thanks

use different player like winamp bsplayer or real one and if u say that you dont like those players then you are going to be stuck with a useless wmplayer

When i install the older version it says i have the newer version installed already so it doesnt let me download it. i try removing windows media player 10 but it just says rollback is completed and im still able to open up media player. help?

omg just get winamp or bsplayer or something that works. also i would try to turn system restore. And you shouldnt have gotten ten it is a beta.

but someone told me to download 10

well in retrospect i metioned it but it sounds like you cannot operate 10 and should just system restore or get a new player.

10 is Beta and you run the risk of problems with beta programs .Did you try reinstalling it ,sometimes with a program installed allready it will give you otions ,either Fix ,install or uninstall .
WMP 10 probably comes with out the uninstall option!!!!

You should not be loading Beta versions on your computer with out system restore turned on!

EDIT : You are not the only person trying to remove it either !just do a google search .Check the links out on the site .
