Configured partitions, reloaded windows xp, downloaded all drivers, but laptop is still saying no internet connection due to cannot renew ip address. Have tried ipconfig in command prompt, got media not connected, tried hooking up ethernet from modem, no joy, got "limited or no connection" laptop is not recognising network adaptor, tried to reintsall driver, but laptop will not recognise that the hardware exists, even though it shows up in device manager. at wits end!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated

Post the output of ipconfig /all
Some laptops have a switch that controls the wireless adapter:is it on?
You may need to power cycle the modem to get a wired connection.
Uninstall the network adapters and reinstall.
