Laptop dropping network connection

I have a two part problem and I hoping that it will be something that is easy to fix. I have a Gateway Laptop (not sure of model) and my Wireless Network keeps dropping even though the signal is strong on the wireless list. Also I am unable to use the ethernet connection. When I plug in the cord it has a connection but I am not able to get on the internet. The modem I have is a wireless modem Westell 357 ( I think). I have called my Service provider (Verizon) and they have come out twice. I have a Desk top on the wireless connection also and it uses a Linksys adapter and it nevers drops the signal. My laptop can be right next to the modem and it stills happens. I didn't do anything to my laptop so I thinking that the modem in the laptop it mess up. But I am not really sure how to fix it. It was working fine when I first got it about 2 years ago but this problem has been going on for about 6-8 mths. Please Help.
