I would like to use <H1> and <H2> tags to emphasize important keywords for SEO purposes. Is it XHTML-transitional legal to enclose a <div class="blah"> tag inside an <h1> tag?

He's talking about Star Trek Deepspace 9. I'm actually an enormous Voyager fan. I am pretty sure that Klingon women aren't allowed on the battlefield as the men are. If allowed on the battlefield, it wouldn't be to fight the men. The best dude to ask around here goes by the username of blud - he claims he speaks Klingon fluently.

Just do a google search for "klingon culture"

Basically what I changed was make the alternating colors go horizontally instead of vertically. My reason for doing this was primarily for ease of reading - all the information about each thread is now separated from the next thread. I'd like to hear some other opinions please.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I think he's saying that he actually uses the PayPal service (and therefore, the scripts they have running on their site). They don't offer any scripts.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Ok there Arizona Web, I digress. ;)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I have used a Gigabyte motherboard as well as an Asus and I just overall like Asus better. No specific reason, really, I just feel it's more feature rich and more reliable for me.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Currently I use an .htaccess file for mod_rewrite. However, I heard that it is resource intensive to do it this way, and a better way is via httpd.conf or something? Could someone elaborate for me please? Thanks!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

What sort of SEO techniques do you use? Link swaps? Purchase "artificial" PR by buying links on high PR sites?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Defiitely the direction I'd like to be headed. But there is so much difference between portraying a professional corporate image and where DaniWeb seems to be at now, graphic design wise. Is it possible to portray corporate America without huge banner ads plastered all over? Sometimes I feel that's the only difference between a hobby site and a professional site. Food for thought.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

What you guys are saying seems to be making sense. Diminishing the true value of the google toolbar's PR definitely goes with Google's plans to eliminate the buying and selling of PR for PR's sake.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Thanks for that. So I guess the PR toolbar's functionality is limited to getting webmasters to believe your site is worthy of having their link on it?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Definitely something I didn't know. Thanks for that :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

A very warm welcome back! You've been away for nearly half a year now, haven't you? Ooh you missed a lot - and were missed a lot too :) Gotta play catch-up now!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Check out this thread = [thread]8160[/thread]

So you're saying that lets say on Monday I get a new backlink from a high PR site. By that Friday, my ranking in the SERPS will reflect this? Even though the backlinks shown on link:www.daniweb.com aren't recalculated yet? That would be cool if it's true!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hey mnemtsas! Hope to see you around our site promotion forums :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I had a few reasons for wanting to move away from the www.techtalkforums.com domain name. The primary reason being that it was very long-winded and confusing. Many people couldn't even remember the site title - techtalk.com ; talktech.com ; techtalkforum.com ; talkingtechforum.com ; etc. That definitely hurt any branding I tried to do to the site. Another problem with the name was that it reminded people too much of tech support - the name didn't seem reminiscent of programming or web dev forums. For that reason, techtalkforums.com now points directly to, you guessed it, our tech support category.

I then stumbled upon an article somewhere about how the new wave in site branding and corporate branding was to avoid keywords in the name. For example, the best way to market your name, is to have something that, alone, has no meaning - but over time, it gets associated with you and only you.

The following is an excerpt from an article over at: http://www.howtoadvice.com/DomainBranding
Let me ask you another question: why there is Coca-Cola instead of Candy Water or Mercedes Benz instead of Comfortable Car?

The domains like Amazon.com, Overture.com, Google.com, eBay.com or even GoDaddy.com are perfect examples of what direction you should move. My-Cool-PPC-Search-Engine.com or BestOnlineBooks.com are the worst examples of the domain names you can ever imagine.

…
Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

My current goal is to grow this site while maintaining its community feel. However, I think that I would like to move away from me - or the name Dani - being the center focus of the site. I can't see how it would be a positive / productive thing in the future to promote the site as a hobby site run by a 21 year old college girl. Disagreements? Comments?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Do you think that petitioning mods of other sites is a bit sneaky? ;) Hmm ...

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I saw them there months earlier and I know Hostvoice has definitely been around for a pretty long while, but I see they're using a redirection for the link they have on phpBB so they don't count ;)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

But the phpBB homepage has very few links off of it - and it's fluctuating between PR9 and 10. Surely the links that appear on the page should be an automatic PR7 at least, no? I am pretty sure they've been there for months already.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

phpBB does pass PR to links in the forums. However, it doesn't seem that they are doing so for the list of sponsors labeled "Helpful Resources" that show up on the www.phpbb.com homepage.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I just noticed from within the finder that the root of my drive has a file, with no extension, called 0, that is a 0 byte file. Does anyone know where this could possibly have come from and whether it's save to delete? It should be, no? I'm thinking maybe it's a file needed by one of my apps which will eventually write to it? I dunno.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

DaniWeb currently uses only about 250 MB of hdd space to store the forum database. However, for the amount of traffic we receive (about 600,000 unique sessions each month), we require nearly 80 GB of bandwidth monthly.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

There has been word around the neighborhood that G is trying to prevent the selling of PR - but what exactly are they doing about the matter, or are they going to do in the future? Currently, some high PR pages which sell text links have their PR transferring power blocked. (example: PR9/10 page www.phpbb.com which doesn't show up as a backlink for any of the sponsors on the homepage) How drastically is this going to change the off-site SEO scene?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

To those of you who founded large websites, what stirred the most amount of growth in your site's history? Was it a mention in a local magazine or e-zine? etc. For us, it has just been a constant effort and struggle together with a lot of SEO and making contacts in the industry - not really one thing that lead to an instant burst of traffic.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Here's a question to all those forum administrators out there. How do you choose your moderators? The most common way is to pick out the exceptional members of your forum and ask them if they would like to moderate. This is great because your new mod is already very interested in your community. What DaniWeb does is place those exceptional members in a Community Helpers usergroup. When there is a need for a new mod, one is hand-picked out of that usergroup.

Something else that I have found works really great is to go to popular techie forums out there, and petition their moderators and high-post members and inform them that DaniWeb is a new computer community that needs some help starting out, ask if they would like moderator status. I don't petition blind - I see the quality of their posts, their knowledge, and, of course, I already know that they are interested in forums and can be a devoted forum member. This has proved to be a good way for me to find moderators on such a wide variety of subjects that DaniWeb covers.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Are you keeping it set up this way or should I still be on the lookout for the reverse? Personally, I always use www in domain names.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

For awhile, I chose to use ValueClick banners as an alternative to AdSense, when AdSense was just showing PSAs. I created a file called valueclick.html and all I put on it was the ValueClick javascript code - and I gave it the page title: ValueClick - AdSense Alternative. I then set up AdSense to use that file.

To my surprise, that valueclick.html page is now #1 in the Google SERPS for the keyword "adsense alternative" !! How funny is that ??

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Thanks for the feedback. It gave me some insight into where I want to head with DaniWeb.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Thanks for your feedback. But do you tend to get the impression that the more corporate, professional forums offer more, and more reputable, information?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

No one can understimate the value of keyword-rich pages ... if I wanted to get a high ranking in the SERPS for "keyword" which would hold more weight - backlinks with "keyword" as the anchor text or more mentions of "keyword" in my content? Are they both equally important? Is a high ranking an achievable goal having one without the other?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Does anyone know what's going on with this July PR update? In the past, backlinks and PR were updated together. That doesn't seem to be the case this time. Not only that, I've heard some mention of a few sites fluctuating in PR lately in addition to some previously PR0 and new sites gaining PR. Anyone care to guess when the PR update will come? Or has the dreaded G decided to skip out on us this month!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

When looking for an information-based forum where you could learn, would you rather belong to a close-knit community or a professional corporate site? For example, we all want to feel welcome in a forum. But there is a more family-oriented feel (such as this forum) or the more corporate feel of internet.com forums, for example.

Does the latter give off the impression of a more knowledgable userbase? Is there a feeling of more reputable information from a commercial-oriented site?

Which is the best approach for DaniWeb to be headed in the future?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Thanks for all your feedback. Don't worry Dave, I don't plan on leaving the site entirely. It's just that there is so much behind the scenes work to do that for the most part I don't really have the time to answer questions like my moderators do. I guess, however, it can be looked upon as that we each have different roles to play in running the site. And the site wouldn't exist without the moderators and it wouldn't exist without the admin, either. Comments?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Thanks for the positive feedback Killertypo :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

When I first started this site, I worked really really hard to make sure that every question was answered. However, as the forums grew bigger, it got harder and harder to do. Not only because there were more questions asked, but because more behind the scenes stuff needs to be accomplished now on a daily basis. Nowadays, I find myself spending most of my time working on the business aspects of the site - making contacts in the industry, promoting the site, improving the backend, making sure that advertising dollars cover the growing expenses, finding advertisers and site sponsors, managing advertising campaigns, etc. When I'm not doing that I'm replying to 25+ emails a day from members who lost their password, are having problems activating their accounts, etc. I have also somewhat taken up a policy of letting moderators handle problems as they see fit - basically letting the moderators completely lead the community.

Do you think this is a very bad thing? Can a forum grow with a behind-the-scenes admin? Or does everyone want to see that omnipresent admin going around answering questions and being the glue that holds the community together?

I have another question along these same lines. Right now the moderators are doing a fantastic job not only answering questions, but together leading a growing community. Do you think that moderators hold it against a forum with an absent admin? Sorta like they feel that if I don't care enough to make the time …

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

There is so much hype about PR and google SEO - but how does one go about getting up those SERPS for the other engines such as Overture and MSN? Google might be the biggest alone, but I'm sure that it can't defeat by far all of the others put together? I've tried Overture PPC but haven't found it very beneficial.

What is the difference between <div align="center"> and <div style="text-align:center"> aside from the obvious difference that the latter is CSS?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

At this time, those are the only links pointing to that page. However, having your link show up on DaniWeb will help your rankings in Google because our link directory pages have a nice Google PageRank.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hi Puckdropper, I hope you enjoy your stay here.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Are you talking about an avatar, which is the icon that appears below your username in all of your posts? If so, click on the USER CP link in the purple navigation bar near the top of the page. Then click the Edit Avatar link in the User Control Panel menu. Better yet, here's a direct link: http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/profile.php?do=editavatar

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

www.searchfeed.com I believe also pays through PayPal. They offer keyword-targeted text ads, similar to google.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I did some research and found the code to do the opposite, which is to add the www, is:

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^daniweb\.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.daniweb.com/$1 [L,R=301]

However, it doesn't seem to work with subdirectories. Can anyone comment or help out with this? Thanks!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yup, I'm a Safari fan :) What do you mean by "DaniWeb details" ?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Tattle tale ;) That motto does keep me out of the Security forum though!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

While searching for a solution the other day, I came across using negative margins, but I was confused and didn't understand how they work. I'm still confused, actually. I checked out the CSS you provided - but I don't see how using negative margins centers the div?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I did some investigating and it seems the word on the street is that everyone is seeing 2-3X the number of backlinks previously reported, as Google is now showing < PR4 backlinks as well? Not sure of the ramifications of this. Anyone care to comment?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

FYP? What is that?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

We all know that mac developers have always been left high and dry when it comes to having to live without the Google toolbar, and therefore without the convenience of a PR bar while web browsing.

However, I stumbled upon this tool: http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/pagerank-mac/

I'm a windows and mac user and I've yet to try it yet, but it does look quite promising. Don't ya think? I know a lot of mac people who have been begging for something like this.
