I forgot to add ... so I'll do that now. To find out the PR of any page, all you need is to download the Google IE toolbar and to enable showing PageRank. Then, as your browse the web in Internet Explorer, the PR of any page will be shown as a green bar.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

PR, or Google Pagerank, is a very rough estimation of how important google feels a webpage is. Note I said web page and not web site. In other words, each page of a site has its own PR. Generally the higher the PR of a page, the more google will spider links off of that page (the deeper it will crawl) and the more often it will spider the page.

In any case, PR is calculated into google's ranking alogorithm (not as much as it used to be, though) and is therefore a factor in how well your site ranks in the search engines. Note that a high PR itself doesn't guarantee higher placement - it is just a rough estimate that most likely your site will be crawled deeper and spidered more by google.

The way that google figures it, if a lot of different pages from all around the Internet all link to a particular webpage, that page must be pretty important or have pretty good content. Therefore, PR of a page is calculated based on how many other pages from different websites all link to that page. When a site links to your page, it's called a backlink. i.e. when someone says that they have 50 backlinks, it means that 50 pages have linked to their page.

In any case, not all backlinks carry the same weight. If you get linked from a page with a high PR that google considers important, it carries …

The google API lets software developers and web dev programmers to write applications that can interact with google. For example, someone could write a PHP script that lets you input a URL and it shows the google PR of that URL. In other words, your program queries google behind the scenes for this info, and google provides it without revealing any secrets as to how PR is calculated.

However, you need what's called a google api key to do this. A key uniquely identifies you as a programmer. You use this key in the software that you write. It is a way for google to keep tabs on what software is querying it.

I found that article pretty truthful. I used to have a Windows and Linux machine - I'd use Win as my default system and Lin for all of my schoolwork and to play around on. Since I got my mac, I'm in love. It's the best of both worlds :) I even got rid of my linux machine entirely in favor of my mac.

Can someone please explain to me the difference between ++i and i++ when written as part of an expression (i.e. within loops and if statements) ? Thanks :)

Hi there Robert. :) This is just an introduction thread in the Geek's Lounge. Please register and post your C++ questions there. But, yes, I think C++ is a good first language - it's used by a wide variety of people for a wide variety of things ;) To develop games, business applications, operating systems, etc. Welcome hextar as well :)

Hi Jiyu. A test, eh? I don't like tests :)

1. What I do is create lots of ad groups which each target a specific area of the forums. I have an ad group for each individual forum. Then, for each ad group, I create about 3 highly targeted ads which incorporate keywords into them. i.e. an ad group to advertise the PHP forum will use words such as php, zend, etc. in the ad copy. I get a very low CTR but of those who do click, 5 to 10% of them go on to register on the forums. So I'm happy with a good conversion rate.

2. I'm not sure right now as google is in the middle of some weird type of change to their ranking algorithm. Supposedly PR isn't being weighed nearly as much as it used to. For the most part, better ranking in the SERPS can be achieved by getting more backlinks and lots of em. Expect a decrease in traffic over the summer however.

3. Go on an agressive link-finding campaign. Visit other sites with a subject related to yours, and send a pleasant email over to the webmaster saying that you like their site and would love to partner with them. Try to make it a habit of sending out at least 10 of these e-mails per day for awhile. Now suppose your site is about "widgets". Do a google search for "widgets directory" and "widgets link swap" and "widgets links" - odds are most of the sites that come …

Everyone is welcome to suggest ideas for contests and prizes. In the end, it's up to me and the moderator team to actually create the contests in the forum - as I will be the person supplying the prizes :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Well we do have a contests forum. Perhaps a solving challenge where the first person to solve it could win a prize would be a very good idea :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

LOL :) That it does

I'm seeing the new backlinks too :) Still a lowly PR5 though :(

Patience is a virtue ;) No replies to any of your questions? Moderators try to get around to as much as we all can, but just look at the sheer number of questions there are for us :) So give us a lil bit of time ;)

It looks like some of your questions have been previously answered: http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/search.php?do=process&showposts=0&starteronly=1&exactname=1&searchuser=nanosani

Anything will work that doesn't allow the *direct* posting or attaching of the log file contents. Ways that work include zipping the log file and attaching the zip, attaching an image of the log file, etc.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

OK Cool. Thanks :) The reason I wasn't sure was because one can have a PayPal account without ever being connected to a bank account or ever withdrawing any money at all. In such a case, PayPal acts simply as an online bartering system.

What I am going to do is just print out all of my PayPal history and send it off to the family accountant :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Well, everything I earn/spend via PayPal is to/from an individual person for a service. Similar to if I were to pay a friend $50 cash to help me out in something.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Because traditionally when you purchase a shared hosting account (meaning you rent space on a server that hosts lots of accounts) you purchase a different account for each site. Then, if you want to put out the bucks for a dedicated server, where the entire machine is under your control, you can have as many different accounts (domains) on that server.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Here in New York, how do I go about paying taxes on PayPal? For example, suppose I start out a month with a PayPal balance of $0. The first week of the month, I earn $500 selling advertising space on DaniWeb which goes into my PayPal balance. I never withdraw anything. The third week of the month, I spend $150 purchasing ad space on another website, which comes directly from my PayPal balance. At the end of the month, I direct deposit the $350 I have into my bank account. According to the U.S. government, did I just make $350? Or did I make $500? I only ever saw $350 of it. Does a PayPal balance count as real money or does it not count as real money until it is in the form of a check or ends up in your bank? I have heard people consider a PayPal balance simply a form of online credit that is associated strictly with the paypal.com service. In other words, it isn't real money until you withdraw from PayPal.

Thanks so much :) When I first started this forum, I basically participated in almost every thread (what admin doesn't with 5 members and 20 threads? ;) ) As the forum grew, not only was I unable to keep up, but I find myself interacting with the community a lot less than even moderators and regular members. Which worried me a bit. But after seeing all the replies in this thread, I'm feeling a lot more secure that I'm on the right path.

This page is known as a cover sheet. Sometimes it is setup on an application basis while other times it is systemwide. Does this just happen when you're using one program, such as Microsoft Word, for example? Or does it always happen? If it always happens, then go into the Control Panel and click on printers. Find your printer and right click onto Properties. (I'm almost 100% this is right, but I haven't used Windows98 since 2000). In any case, the printer properties varies from printer to printer and model to model. But there should be some reference somewhere in there to a cover sheet. (You might have to see if there are multiple tabs in the window).

The error you're seeing is a JavaScript error most likely caused by the dropdown navigation menu. However, I don't get that error message and my browser is telling me there aren't any script errors. So I don't know :-/ Does it happen all the time?

Hey there Brian! Thanks for the kudos about my mod_rewrite solution. I actually designed and skinned that mod_rewrite forum myself and skinned the real estate one as well :) In addition to any other site Morgan throws my way. So thank you again :)

As for the mod_rewrite solution I used, I actually spoke to Morgan about coming up with a step-by-step tutorial with directions on how to implement it yourself. So stay tuned for that! Most likely I'll have it written way before the end of the month.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Ok, cool, thanks Brian. If you scroll up and look in the navigation bar of this page, you'll see that a link to the Search Engines/SEO forum appears in the breadcrumb in addition to as a big link. Since it's like this on every forum thread, I figured all those extra duplicate links would add up, especially so early in the page.

You could have a variable called marys_account_number, a variable called marys_balance, a variable called joes_account_number, and a variable called joes_balance. You could also have a function that withdraws money into Mary's account by decreasing the marys_balance variable, etc. But doesn't that all seem a bit redundant? What if we're talking about 20 people instead of just two? Classes allow us to formulate a template for one person. We can then create what is called an instance of a class.

So, for example, take a class called bankAccount. You could have one instance of the class called MarysAccount which contains all the information about Mary's bank account. You could also have JoesAccount which contains all the information about Joe's bank account.

Classes contain two kinds of information/data: public and private. Public variables and public functions can be accessed from anywhere. However, private variables and functions can only be accessed from within the class itself.

For example, suppose there is a public variable balance inside the bankAccount class. Now suppose there was an instance of this class called joesaccount. With that balance variable public, anyone can simply say joesaccount.balance = 1000000; and Joe made himself a millionaire.

That's why we use private data members. By making balance private, it can only be accessed from a public function inside the bankAccount class. For example, take the public function "withdraw". We can call joesaccount.withdraw(500); The withdraw class would first make sure that there is $500 in the account to withdraw. …

Well, as you can see, I use vBulletin, which will run you $160. The best free forum systems are Invision and phpBB. Invision I have absolutely no experience, so perhaps I'm not the best person to offer assistance.

However, the quick answer is: "no, Invision and phpBB both are not search engine friendly out of the box. They both require a mod/hack to make them so. Instructions to apply such hacks are available from the respective forum communities. i.e. for phpBB, you can find info at www.phpbbhacks.com" My previous post was basically an explanantion of what these hacks do.

Hi John from Sunny Fla!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm not sure right now of any existing TOS helper tutorials or that sort. However, your site is yours, and you know what you want to get out of it and what you don't want your visitors to get away with. What I would do is go around to various popular websites and read their TOS. In your case, read the TOS for sites such as Burst! Media, ValueClick, Google AdWords/AdSense, and the like. See what they say and for each point they make, note whether you agree or disagree with it. Create a bulleted list, so to speak. Once you think you're confident with the list, translate that list into words.

It's hard for us to help you any further as you haven't provided us with the details of your advertising program. Every site on the net that works in a different way needs to be protected against different things. i.e. a TOS from my site most certainly won't work on yours.

What I would recommend doing is checking out other TOS's out there. Create a bulleted list of points you want to make. And then post that here along with a brief description of the program you're building. I'll then be able to offer more assistance.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

First of all, this is the wrong place to post questions. Second of all, we don't help with homework problems unless you show some effort on your part. Check out the C++ forum. Post your question there. Show us what you've done on it so far and where you're stuck. And we'll be more than happy to help you. Just not here in this forum/thread.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

By default, all of the pages in an Invision forum are along the lines of index.php?showforum=XX and index.php?showtopic=XX

This is not too search engine friendly because of the query strings in the URLs. It's better to have clean URLs such as /showforum/XX/ or /showforumXX.html

I really don't have much experience personally with Invision to be able to help you do this. What I will say is that you need to use mod_rewrite in an .htaccess file to rewrite the URLs. Check out some other threads on mod_rewrite here to figure out how to do that.

Then, you'll have to edit your Invision forum templates. More specifically, the forum index and the actual forums showing the threads - and wherever it has a reference to go to index.php?... edit it out to look like threadXX.html or forumXX.html

Did that make sense? If not, I'll try to offer more assistance.

I don't want anyone to feel like this site is exclusively for experienced computer users. Perhaps I could offer some assistance?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I have always left the default vBulletin emails that my forum sends out. (i.e. to activate a new account, inform a user of a new private message, etc.) However, I finally took the time to customize each e-mail - and I can't believe how much it's helped!

The vBulletin forum system is so common nowadays, I guess I never realized how many people get the exact same sterile e-mail from so many forums. Customizing the e-mail makes the forum more welcoming and has really increased the number of new registrations that actually post.

Just a helpful hint ;)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Since you were able to create this thread, you're account has been activated. Your activation ID was built into the URL that you clicked on. Only if that link doesn't work do you need to fill in your activation code.

As far as having to login everytime you visit any page, that's definitely not the way it is supposed to work. Are you using Internet Explorer? What version? It seems like a cookie problem to me. Do you have cookies enabled - that's probably the problem. When you login, do you check off the "remember me" checkbox?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

If you are using OS X, the gcc compiler comes with the BSD subsystem. It's an optional component to install during OS X setup.
