Sometimes when I boot up, the computer will freeze after you hear the POST beep and all it says:

CPU Loading

It will not move at all. What I have to do is a hard shutdown, wait 10 seconds and then boot it back up and it works just fine.

Suggestions?

I got a distress call from a teacher and this is what she wrote:

how did my son's laptop dial up an overseas porn site without him knowing it? He swears he did not command his computer to do this - that there was no popup that asked him to dial when he went to this gaming site that dialed up an international porn site - what could be going on with this? Verizon says it is my carrier's fault - Internt America -

Either
A-Her son is lying
B-He signed a digital Cert. saying that it was okay
C-She just has no clue what happened

She told me that she was right there when he went to the gaming site and watched him play games. Then next thing she knows she is being hit with a HUGE fee for overseas charges and she can't do anything about it.

Verizon is the only provider out here and there is nothing we can do about it. Any suggestions?

Has anyone ever heard of a CD-ROM Destroying a CD? I Just had a teacher come to me and said that she put this CD in, 10 seconds later heard a loud POP and ejected the tray and there was nothing gut shards of a CD left. She knows that there are pieces left in the ROM.

If anyone has heard of anything like this happening, let me know. And if it has, what shoud I do about it (Other than replace the ROM)?

I get alot of errors when I go into scan disk on this one computer. It gives me that 'Scandisk has restarted 10 times...' stuff and it will not fix. I tried to defrag it last night and nothing happened. I have also uninstalled some programs that I knew were bogging it down and it is still slower than christmas.
Here are some specs:

OS: Win98
Processor: AMD-K6
and 62.0MB RAM

Any ideas?

as usual, I have no clue as to what it is. I look at the properties and it says that the device is working fine. I will try re-installing the origional drivers and see what that will do.
CSGAL- It was working just fine until the last update that I did on it.
I want to be a good techie and give the computer back the way that it was.. I want to get paid.

I have a modem on an e-Machine that will not stay open. It will open the port, hear the dial tone and then just click off before it can dial the number.
The OS is ME

Also, I just recently did an update with the drivers from the Microsoft website.
Is there any way to correct this problem?

bluedos82 42 Posting Pro

Well, that is what the teacher told me. This is an old computer running Win98 and it keeps freezing. She tells me that it freezes when she submits her attendence (the program here is called Winschool) or when she checks her e-mail (Outlook) or does anything. If she has more than one program/window open, then it freezes. I have already been in the computer to boost the RAM (I only added 32, that was all I had at the time) It made some improvements. SO far I have it stable enough to send out this plea for help. Anyone?

Something like that. And yes, we did read the fine print. We thought that it might be worth a shot, but so far, we are not impresssed. I would not advise anyone to get it unless you have a decent dial up line. Ours... well, we live out in the middle of BFE and it is just bad.

"*breathe* I would like your special" The kid behind the counter asks "Which one would you like, sir? We have a lovely anti-astmatic pizza."

"Yes, *breathe* I think I would like that. *Breathe* does it come in *breathe* a large?*
"Yes sir it can, anything else I can get you?" Darth looks around and all the troopers shake their heads no and continue to be on guard.
"No young one, that will be it. *breathe* I will need 23,345,5678,766 of those pizzas, all large *breathe*" Kid looks at him and disbelief.
"It will take us weeks!" Darth waves his hand
"You will make my pizzas"......

I have the NetZero HS and it is not what I thought it was. The 'high speed' only applies to pictures, links and text. It DOES NOT apply to downloads or anything that requires alot of bandwith. So, it looks like the web is faster, but only on things that you are looking at. ALSO, when you get the software and use it fo rhte first time, the pictures come out blurry! Not a good thing. You will have to adjust the settings. And the more defined you make a picture, the slower the connection.

Another thing is the price. It might say that it is only 14.99, but that is what it is per month and you have to pay 6 MONTHS IN ADVANCE.
The way that I see it, when my 6 months are up, I am ging to the $10 program. Still cheaper and the same stinkin speed.

bluedos82 42 Posting Pro

This is cool. Do this towards the end of the month.
Did you know about the *2 feature? Yeah, this little baby can save you $10 a month on your bill. All you have to do is to dial *2 and press talk. (If the voice says that you need to have an upgrade, take it. It costs nothing to get) You will hear 'Press 1 for English 2 for Spanish' Select your language and listen to 'Clair'. This is just an automated machine. Wait about 3 seconds and say (into the phone) 'CREDIT FOR DROPPED CALLS' Then 'Clair' will say something like this:

'Got it! Credit for a dropped call. Please hold while we retrieve your account information. We apologize for this inconvience. Your account has been adjusted for 1 minute of courtesy time at the highest local airtime rate.' When this is done, just wait for her to say 'How can I help you?' again and repeat the process. DO this 20 times and it saves you 10 bucks a month off your bill. If you have more than one phone, have all your phones take 10 off. We have 5 phones, so that takes $50 off our bill each month!

Also, did you know that if you have a 2 year contract with Sprint, you are eligiable for an upgrade? I'm not sure what that means, but I know that it is cool.

But I just thought that some people who have Sprint …

Another problem that I am having.....

Okay, I re-installed Win98SE and it started fresh... When I try to install it (OfficeXP) this time, it says that I am missing fileMSFR3EN.DLL. I have checked the disk for the file and there is no such file.
I have inspected the disk and it is scratched up a bit.. nothing major, just the little scratches that one gets from constant use. The disk will work in other computers, but not this one. I tried to install one program at a time (i.e. First I did word, then Excell, ect.) and that didn't work. Any ideas?

Alright, I have a monitor that turns off automaticly. I have already checked the powersave options and it is turned off. I have it set on ALWAYS ON and nothing shuts down unless the user shuts it down. But it still turns off for some reason. The teacher who has this computer says that they have to turn the computer off and on about 5 times a day. Any thoughts on what might be causing it?

ALSO forgot to mention: I did switch out the monitors, they are both good and perfect working monitors.

bluedos82 42 Posting Pro

You have 98 and its upgradeable to win98 SE,
Office XP is not reallymeant for win98 !!
You don't need the upgrade to install win98 full versions there is a trick .Restart windows with the win98 bootdisk,at the a:\ prompt type REN C:\windows\win.com win.old ,there is a space between win.com and win.old
Then type, Setup and install win98se over win98,you will be aked if you want to install to c:\windows000 ,say no and then rempove the 3 ,zers so that it overwrites win98

I just did that and now it is saying that it can not finish the install because the file MSOADICT.DLL is missing. I contacted a fellow geek and he said that none of his XPOffice Cds had the file on them. Also, he told me that they installed Office from the network at one point, but many of the installs failed, so they stopped. Any ideas?

bluedos82 42 Posting Pro

I know that it really isn't meant for 98, but all I do is what I am told. If the admin says to do it, I do it. (Not trying to sound mean)

ERROR 2355: Setup cannot access a file cabinet. Check your connection to the network, or CD-ROM drive. For other potential solutions to this problem, see C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\1033\SETUP.HLP.

Also, when I put in the Win98 CD, it tells me

How do I obtain the upgrade? and do I need this upgrade to install XP Office on it?
