Strange isn't it how they on the one hand call Bush an idiot who doesn't know how to put on his underwear in the morning, yet at the same time they think he's some evil genius who's turned the US into some kind of dictatorial state without anyone noticing (and without getting rid of the political opposition, despite the claims that there are secret concentration camps where everyone who disappears because he's opposed to the man goes).

Something's not right there.
If those people disappear, why haven't they?
If Bush is an evil genius, explain why he's so stupid?
If he's so stupid, how can he have come up with such a brilliant plan to take over the country?

George Bush is stupid, Carl Rove and Dick Cheney on the other hand... (Even though I strongly disagree with their ultra-conservative agenda I applaud their intelligence)

Im am just wondering how to change the frame color of a table.
The following solution works but isn't very pretty. My test code is as follows.

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTNL 4.01//END"
          "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">
<html>
  <head>
    <style>
      body { background-color: black ; color: white; }
    </style>
    <title> test </title>
  </head>
  <body>

    <table border="1"  cellpadding="4px" cellspacing="6" width="732px" height="800" style="margin: 0 auto; background-color: blue; color: black">
      <tr height="200" style="background-color: white">
    <th width="200"><p> content goes here </p></th>
    <th width="532"><p> content goes here </p></th>
      </tr>
      <tr height="600" style="background-color: white">
    <th width="200"> <p> content goes here </p> </th>
    <th width="532"> <p> content goes here </p> </th>
      </tr>
    </table>

  </body>
</html>

As is evident, the frame color is blue. But I have to override the table color with white to make the cells themself the correct color. Is there anyway that I can just color the cell frames themselves?

Personally I have no direct experience with unix, except of course mac os x (I guess its unix...), but I do have experience with both freeBSD and various linux distros. So I will respond to the best of my knowledge in accordance with my previous experiences with freeBSD and linux.

>What are the potentials?

Basically power. With linux, the potentials are endless. With a little programming and linux experience it is possible to do anything free of charge. Do you want to make your gui look like windows, mac os x, or something completely different? With linux you have choice regarding almost every aspect of your system (including the kernel, the core of your operating system). The neat thing about this is individuality. Linux has no "defaults" (except maybe for compilers. When one compiles almost any program for linux, one uses the gcc: the Gnu Compiler Collection.) and therefore can function and look like anything.

> What would i need to do to my windows Xp laptop to run Unix?

check out the following websites:

http://www.freebsd.org/188189188188 a very "unix like *nix. Derived directly from unix"

http://www.linux.com/189190189189 a general linux website. A great place to get started.

http://www.gnu.org/190191190190 the official website of the GNU project (Gnu's not unix). Learn about the philosophies of free software and why its is superior morally.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

isnt sudo only useful if you want to only run one command as root? When I am cleaning or fixing up my home system I usually just use su. Presumably as sys admin would need root privileges for a extended period of time, therefore making sudo a bit inefficient.

>Actually 15 gig is just barely enough to pull it off. For an install of ubuntu or MEPIS you need a small root partition of about 5 Gb, a linux/swap formatted partition of 512Mb or bigger (I use 1 Gb for swap.) and a home partition of at least 5 gb. That will leave you five gb that you could use for the server. Maybe you could defrag, defrag, defrag and then use an app like gparted to shrink the windows partition to be able to squeeze a bit more room for playing. Another easy idea would be to get another hard drive and use it for linux and testing other operating systems.

For a server, the lfs website says its possible to get a lfs system w/ apache under ~5 mb.

On my arch linux system I believe my base install took up around ~400 mb. (swap is for losers ;-p)

For a server I really don't understand why anyone would use ubuntu... (presumably a person who is knowledgeable enough to run a server would be knowledgeable enough to use another distro)

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

2>Installing multiple Linux distros to the same filesystem would be difficult (extremely difficult), and there's no real need to do such a thing anyway. Just create a separate partition(s) for each Linux distro that you plan to use.

I dont think it would that hard. just have multiple fake roots and chroot to the right root with a some type of "pre-init" script. (maybe have you could have a universal kernel? Or you could I guess have some type of loader kernel? mm...)

Just because you were nice and listened to gentle talking doesn't mean that everyone would. Assuming it would be foolishness.

Just because you love Linux doesn't mean everyone would, just because you like C++ programming doesn't mean that everyone would, just because you don't know how to deploy a EJB doesn't mean that no one would. Accepting that everyone is a snowflake and so has to be handled differently.

>Yes; however, many people have problems admitting when they are wrong.. Also, this example of 'Golgi Bodies' is not an adequate example.. Yes, the doctor probably felt strongly that they did not exist.. but, compared to religion this is nothing. Religion motivates people physically and emotionally.. it would be difficult for someone who had spent years believing and practicing a certain faith to revoke this faith, and admit that he/she was wrong.

Thats the point, it is difficult for a brainwashed person to renounce something the have been taught to believe their entire life. I find it funny that some of these people actually think they are thinking logically.

>If someone has a strong opinion, it's impossible to change their mind with logic.

I agree with you in regards that when dealing with normal people, logic and science rarely are effective. What is usaully effective is raising peoples' misplaced emotions, that always works. But with scientists and other academics and highly intelligent people I do not believe this is the case. For example in Richard Dawkins's The God Delusion he briefly mentioned a scientist who for 15 years did not believe in Golgi Bodies. This all changed when a scientist delivered a presentation, essentially proving, beyond reasonable doubt, the existence of Golgi Bodies. After the presentation he stood up and said "I've been wrong for 15 years." Did he have a dogmatic and illogical opposition to Golgi Bodies? Was he indoctrinated at birth to believe in Golgi Bodies? No, he just felt that the evidence was not there. And when it was presented to him, he immediately changed his mind. There is nothing wrong with admitting you were wrong. This Richard Dawkins said "brought tears to his eyes."
