whats he want then?

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

pretty sweet. Is that how most debian servers work? how about new packages?

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

I mean lets say you have three text files in one folder.

the path for them would be:

c:\\<whatever>\\yourfolder\\file1
c:\\<whatever>\\yourfolder\\file2
c:\\<whatever>\\yourfolder\\file3

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

how did you update it?

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

one the best games ever made, in my opinion.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

>And why not? If the hardware can handle them, and people like you can turn them off, I don't see a problem. This isn't a good argument against any OS.

I hate graphical effects. They take up cpu time, they take up ram, and they fill my harddrive with crap. They make a OS unstable and complicated. They also hide whats really happening in the system. For example, I run all my applications from a terminal because I like to see the errors and warning most applications generate. With fancy effects and WMs thats impossible.

>You know what? People don't give a rats ass about open source. If you go to just about any average person and explain what open source is, then ask them if they care, here is the answer you'll get: "Yay. I can read the source even though I can't understand it. Whatever."

So? Non-open source software is immoral and wrong. (that doesn't mean I don't use it.. ;-) Non-open source software hurts the community, the country, and the world.

>All of those involve poorly written applications in the majority of cases. Do you really think the OS is the only program that breaks things?

I also said that linux was unstable, you apparently did not feel you had to comment about that. Linux also has many poorly written applications. (cough cough firefox) But some OSs are more stable than others. Linux is more stable than Windows, less stable than mac, …

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

My first distro was ubuntu than debian. I have "apted" but I have abandoned debian for a distro more my taste. Actually I have "aptituded" btw, I have a question about debian: why do people apt-get something when aptitude is the far superior tool? I bet your debian system cannot boot up in 9 seconds!

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

you do not have to compile programs. And the great thing is its i686 optimized so you get about the same performance as gentoo without compiling!

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

omg lol....thats like over 200 gb right?

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

I just tried arch linux and it is amazing! Very good package management and since its for advanced linux users there is no bloat!

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

yeah, its just like reading any other files. Just instead of the file name, but the path to the file. If your using windows you need two backslashes.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

Whats wrong with linux? I think its far superior to both Mac and Windows.

Mac:
Treats you like a moron. Too many graphical effects. People think your "cool" if you use a mac. Not fully open source. (granted its kernel is open source but that is not enough) Against choice. Obviously the best hardware support.

Windows:
Slow, buggy, unstable. Everyone uses it. Not open source. Against choice. Hard to program with. Good hardware support.

Linux:
fast, sometimes unstable. Easy to program with. Not very user friendly. Powerful bash shell. Open source. ok hardware support.

freeBSD:
very stable, fast. Easy to program with. Not very user friendly. Powerful shell. Open source but not gpl'ed. Really crappy hardware support.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

cheat is fun! But I like chess and thinking games better.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

play? Are you talking about poker or stock market trading? btw, I am not allowed to play poker either. My dad says pokers for losers....

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

linux boot up cd should do the job!

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

So you over clock for speed, but don't that lead to a hotter unit and I through you wanted to keep temp down. It's like you put a NO2 kit on your car motor, but if you don't rework the lower end,ie crank, you'll blow it up the first time you switch it on. So to keep temps down you water cool the cpu, right?

You do not have to watercool cpus! I good solid fan will suffice. (obviously not stock)

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

Oh...you have a BIOS password. You have a desktop right? To reset it open up your machine and on the motherboard you can either 1) take out the battery or 2) flip some switch. This should reset your password.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

You wouldn't. But I do not see what makes Christianity right and Islam, Buddhism, paganism, wrong. Of course there is major differences but they all seem pretty much the same....

Oh and sorry about all my hell questions....but I have one more. Are you saying that before Christianity was founded, everyone on earth had been going to hell for thousands of years?

So now your arguement is that you're better at doing exams than us so you've gotta be right

No I am not. I am just saying that I do not deserve to be treated as a 14 year old. Whenever I tell people I am 14 they usaully make some completelly idotic teenager remark. I find it insulting that I am stereotyped with the rest of 14 year olds in America. I just wanted to distince myself from the average teenager and that I do not deserve to be treated as one.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

um....get a book.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

lol...age makes you religious! That gives me an idea. Can you ask this guy why he became a christian? I have never heard of a atheist converting to a religion...

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

so whats your SAT score sk8ndestroy14?

Do you believe that all other religions are wrong except yours? And that all of them will be sentenced to eternal damnation...I mean I believe that every else besides atheists are wrong but at least I do not claim they will suffer....

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

I just got back from my Christian Development Class about an hour ago and ironically, my pastor was talking about how he used to be an atheist... this will probably show you how intelligent he really is.

-One day his father wanted him to go on some kind of trip with him... (I think it was supposed to be a Christian get together), which he of course resisted because he didn't want to be around people like that. Anyway, his dad finally pressured him into going and when they were getting ready to leave, his dad surprised him by bringing 3 other ministers along with him. Through the whole trip there and back, my pastor completely destroyed them with his philosophies and questions of Christianity that they had never been faced with. He said that they were "unequipped to challenge him." And he was right, because by the time they got back, 2 of the men quit the ministry completely. He said that the other one debated with him pretty well though. And he was only a teenager at this time.

Sounds like me ;-)

Does he think that atheists go to hell? I would think he might have a different view than most christians on that matter.

With age comes wisdom. And if you're going to brag then I can too. My SAT score was higher than yours, and I've taken the same advanced classes. I've been to plenty of awards ceremonies and already I've been offered …

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

they have just recently reached a upper boundary on how high they can clock their processors...hence the recent focus on efficiency. Intel is now like AMD...

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

I never knew my isp had a cap, but when I downloaded about 13 gb of linux distros, movies, and videos in one day ;-), the next day my internet connection was at about 5 kb for the rest of the month.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

those are Pentium 4s and the like. Intel finally realized that packing more ghz doesn't really work. So a upper medium end intel core 2 duo is usually clocked at about 2.0 ghz. AMD and intel cpu are starting to have about the same ghz level because of the whole dual core thing. btw, many Pentiums run at like 4 ghz.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

overclocking a server! Sounds like a bad idea. btw, I thought your isp did not let you host a server.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

so do you want to go with the linux cd option if so heres what to do:

  1. acquire an iso image of a linux distribution (get a nice newbie friendly one here)

  2. burn the ISO image to a cd-r or cd-rw (note: this is not a data cd. You must select ISO or bootable in your cd burners options)

  3. stick the cd in your computer and reboot. It should but up to an Ubuntu sign. If not make sure that your BIOS is configured correctly to boot from a cd instead of your hard drive

  4. login

  5. open up a terminal it should be under applications->accessories->terminal (I may be wrong about this)

  6. first type su

  7. type cat /proc/partitions This will allow you to determine what partition windows is on. there will be alpha numeric ids for each partition (e.g hda2, sda1, sdb3).

  8. Determine what partition is your windows partition and what id tag it has.

  9. type mkdir /mnt/harddrive

  10. type mount /dev/<yourpartitionhere> /mnt/harddrive

  11. type cd /mnt/harddrive

  12. type ls You should see your windows partition

  13. copy the files you want to save to an external harddrive, thumbdrive or something with the command cp <directory> <filesystem> -r

  14. unmount the external harddrive with the command umount /dev/<whatever> /<whatever>/<whatever>

  15. reboot

NOTE: with ubuntu you might see icons of your harddrive on the desktop. You can click on them and they will take you to that mounted directory. Than you can just copy and paste. It should feel like windows explorer

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

Iv heard people overclocking low end intel core 2 duos to over 3 ghz!

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

oh sorry missed the top bit.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

if it was a homework assignment. Wouldn't he use functions....

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

but everything works pretty smoothly!

Than you must not use linux! ;-p

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

so whats wrong with booting up with a live linux cd and saving your data then reinstalling?

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

whats the point? The code is not complex enough to make a difference...

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

call me weird but I prefer 32 bit to 64 bit for compatability problems. Adobe has not even released a 64 bit flash player :-(. (now my friend thinks that linux sucks). Most linux distro's do not support 64 bit or amd so its not very good for linux. Virtually your only choice is gentoo!

my friend got a amd based hp laptop and I got the intel equivalent. On basic benchmark tests (that is my program I wrote ;-) my computers beats his at both float points and normal integer calculations. btw, they are both dual core and both clocked at 2.0 ghz.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

awful! (video quality that is ;-)

Aia commented: I don't care what they say I about you. Just kidding ;) +2
Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

for 2D I would use SDL or allegro. Allegro is _alot_ easier to use than SDL. But once you abstract SDL with your own libraries its not so bad.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

to keep price down you could just overclock your graphics and cpu really really high (im told that intel core 2 duos are good to overclock)

I was an AMD man but after the intel core 2 duo was released, AMD got blown away.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

is there any data you want? If so just boot up with a bootable live linux cd copy the files and then reinstall windows.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

Thats not an ultimatum. I was merely stating that lets keep age, race, gender, etc aside and focus on the real issue. When a person falls back to such a low and shallow remark such as: Your..your your wrong because your a girl! Or something of that nature, it implies that the person 1) has nothing of substance to say and is resorting to a lame slanderous comment or 2) the person is bigoted. I highly suspect Christina's remark falls into the former category. Unlike most people, I do not believe that being older makes you better than other people. In fact, I think talented kids are able to think in completely different and unique ways compared to most adults. Here is a nice quote (note I do not truly agree with it but it illustrates my point):

All of us are wrong sometimes, even the youngest of us

ohhic.. what religion is your mother? Yea, some people just believe too blindly, and refuse to question anything.

my mom is an atheist. I know it is an odd combination but whatever.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

Yes, I always thought logic would win out, but I learned that that it did not after I tried to convince my dad on why god was false, his religion (he is a Muslim, btw) ridiculous, and his habit of not eating pork (its against the Koran) stupid. But alas, I could never convince him, even though, in my mind of course, my arguments were flawless in their logic.

No, I'm talking about an ultimatum. That is not an ultimatum right there :-)

so what are you talking about?

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

Are you talking about my
"And that folks, is the difference between a intellectual and an average person." statement? I was just illustrating two different mindsets.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

Inheritance means that one class derives all shared aspects with a higher more general class. For example I could have the class animal that might contain a few variables. If I made a class called dog that was derived from the animal class, it would also have common variables and function as the animal class. This prevents code replication.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

sorry for being arrogant. (people say I have a BIG problem with that) 1310 btw, is math+language, not reading. I wouldn't say the smartest but whatever. I just wanted to make a point that do not assume anything because I am only 14. I kind of regret posting my age but oh well.

Then don't act your age.

DO you think I do? If so please tell me how I can modify my behavior. (I am not being sarcastic)

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

What do I know???? I scored 1310 on the SATs and am planning for perfect next year. I will be doing calculus next year in 9th grade, and this sunday I am going to an awards ceremony because I got one of highest SAT scores in Maryland for 8th graders. This summer I am going to a three week cryptology course hosted by John Hopkins and next year, in high school, I will be going to Eleanor Roosevelt High school. Eleanor Roosevelt High School is the school this years national science fair winner came from. DO NOT EVER DISCRIMINATE AGAINST MY AGE.
It is not some thing I tolerate or accept.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

Well, I've found absolute truth.

Absolute truth is never known and never will be.

And that folks, is the difference between a intellectual and an average person.

Most people at my dads work are atheists/agnostics. Maybe its because he is a scientist where the average IQ >130.

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

Questioning is vital to be an intellectual. Without questions, without doubt, a person cannot claim to think, to understand, to analyze, to process anything. One must always be doubtful. For ignorance and acceptance is the beginning, and end, of a person.

I don't follow it blindly. I have the truth.

Absolute truth is never known and never will be.

If you were presented with extreme evidence that absolutely proved that god did not exist. Would you still believe in him?

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

I think you should research it yourself without watching crazy videos like that.

You can claim that the video is crazy but you cannot deny the quotes from the bible in the video. The bible is immoral, sick, repulsive, and wrong. Yet ministers somehow always manage to be on the moral "high ground", if ministers can take the moral high ground, than so can rapists, Nazis, serial killers, etc. The ideology Christianity preaches is unfit for kids and probably should have a label on it that reads "for mature audiences only" (like some of my favorite D&D books). Yet people swear on it, and read to their kids.

Do you question your beliefs Christina? Do you analyze your opinion? Do you have doubts, questions, anything? Or do you blindly follow a path that clearly leads to a cliff?(or are you just myopic?)

Yes, well I would certainly switch cities with you any day! The south is extremely conservative.. and no one even follows the "no religion in school" laws.. There are prayers at football and basketball games.. in the morning announcements, etc. People are too nice.. Our city council even had the Chippendale Dancers thrown in jail a couple months ago! I hate it here, and I'm ready to leave

I am lucky enough to live in the north.... On the note of regions, did you know Switzerland is comprised of almost 85% atheists?

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

Do you take everything literally?! It isn't telling you to literally amputate a part of your body! Goodness. The Bible is poetic, Jesus used analogies, words are not taken literal all the time.

Most christians take the bible literally. Either way, this "holy book" of yours is disgusting. The video is here.

Why do all these religious people pray for me? What exactly are you praying for? In your opinion, I am a dirty sinner that has condemned myself to eternal suffering and pain. How will praying help me?

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

Tos?

Sturm 270 Veteran Poster

btw, you posted twice. its like poker, as you said, takes both skill and luck, but i think poker takes more luck.
