Indeed there is no "best". Do you think anything else would survive in the market if one program was "best" in such a way that it alone was suitable for anything and everything? At most there may be a "best" program for a specific task in a specific environment for use by people with specific training. But most likely even that is not the case and there's a host of applications to choose from that all will do an adequate job, the choice depending on personal preference of those making the decisions.

And that last is patently false. There is NO such consensus, never has been either. In fact there's not even a consensus on your first claim that those "greenhouse gasses" CAUSE the rise in temperature. It is equally possible (and far more plausible) that at least to an extent those gasses are released into the atmosphere as a sideeffect of the changing temperatures, reversing the flow of cause and effect from the one the Goreites would have you believe in.

An enum with a lookup method by column type that returns a handler for that column type is the most obvious. Use a Map of column type names to enum instances for that.

Depends on what you want. If communication with non-Java systems is required, you will need to pass your data in a way that those platforms can understand. The easiest way to do that is to use some protocol based on flat text with no binary data whatsoever.
Corba is hardly ever used anymore, been completely superceded by SOAP.

an even bigger farce by the guys trying to make you use fluorescent light instead of incandescent is that the environmental impact of making and disposing of those fluorescents is far far higher than that of an equivalent hour/wattage of incandescent bulbs. The heavy metal polution alone is enough that there's some talk in Europe to ban the things (while another working group is considering a ban on incandescent lights because there's fluorescent ones as an alternative, if both go through we're back to oil lamps and candles, romantic but hardly practical).
Windows might play nice and provide an abstraction layer which makes the command window perceive the mouse as a serial device, but I'm far from certain about that.
RMI in fact makes working with remote objects a lot easier than doing the entire stuff of serialisation, transmission, and receiving yourself.
The actual overhead on the client is quite limited, little more than it would be if you were to establish a socket connection to the server (and the server becomes a lot easier to write).
The only disadvantage (which you'd also have if you're serialising objects yourself) is that it won't be portable to other platforms without serious effort. Only platform agnostic systems like SOAP and Corba provide for that out of the box.
A complete mulithreaded server that will provide a single RMI service (Remote object) can be coded in about 10KB of Java code (not counting the Remote object itself, which is just a Java bean with some special rules) and about half of that's comments and logging code. Those are real figures, figures from an RMI application I created for my certification (currently on hold still awaiting funds for the final exam).
