That is already installed.
I've seen many threads on issues with sharing between XP and 7, but this adds the wrinkle of needing to share an external drive as well.
The drive is connected to my computer, which can obviously use it just fine, but the XP computers can't even see it's there. Last I checked, the Win7 laptop we have could get into things just fine, but haven't gotten to try it in a while as that computer is off at college with my sister more than it is at home.
Everything seems like it's set up right, file and printer sharing is on, permissions setup for everyone to have access, but when trying to access the drive from the XP machine, it can't be seen in "My Network Places", and when trying to get in via the address bar with
\\COMPUTERNAME
and even
\\COMPUTERNAME\SHAREDFOLDERNAME
, it pops up with a login box, which puzzles me, as there should not be any password required to access the drive. Even so, I tried using the XPs user password as well as my own, neither of which worked. So at this point I'm stumped.
As far as network setup goes, we have a router hooked up to the modem, with the router handling the wireless and wired DHCP (modem is just a bridge), my computer is the only wired machine, all others are wireless.
I'm a bit confused with what I need to get what I want here.
Fist I should let you know about the setup here.
My house has only normal cable, so for any HD content I would net to get the broadcast version.
Do TV tuner cards include a built-in antenna? Or would I need to get one and plug it in to the card?
And of that's the case, I'm having trouble finding cards with 2 inputs. In this case I would need the antenna input (so I could get the broadcast channels in HD instead of SD) as well as one for cable (which I realize is only SD, but better then no-D lol).
All the cards I've found from poking around Newegg have only the one input, which leads me to believe they all assume everyone who wants a TV tuner card has digital cable/satellite.
So, can anyone recommend (preferably from Newegg) a TV card that either has a built-in antenna or has 2 inputs that would accommodate an antenna input as well as a standard cable input?
I don't care about is having more than one tuner- I don't plan on recording. I do prefer PCI-e over standard PCI, obviously. System req's are not a concern as I have a rather beastly machine.
Well yes, for my XP install. I haven't modified the Win7 ISO at all.
The drive I just tried was a primary drive, and it was D while I had XP on it.
Just retried it with the newest build (7100). Same problems as before, so this time I decided to just go for broke, and wiped my main WinXP partition and install there.
Still no go, although instead of saying I don't have enough space, it claims Windows can't make a system partition there. This is getting absolutely ridiculous. I'm posting this from a liveCD of Ubuntu, about to reinstall XP for now.
It really shouldn't be this complicated to install a freakin OS.
As far as I knew you couldn't install from within windows. XP told me that the first time I inerted the disc.
Installing from the disc.
Yes, it's a totally blank partition.
I've tried it that way and with the partition being deleted.
I thought of that chance, and since posting I've tried unplugging my main drive completely with no improvement.
Have I really found the unfixable bug? Over 200 views and I've stumped em all... haha.
I am trying to install the 64-bit version of the Windows 7 beta, but have been hitting my head against the same problem over and over and over again.
I tried asking about this at Anandtech, and got almost no help.
The first time I tried to install, I got a "not enough space" error, because I underestimated how much room it needed. No problem, I went back and re-partitioned to give it more room, still no go.
After several tries, I just gave it a nice 60GB chunk to chew on, and STILL it says not enough space.
Here is a pic of how Partition Magic sees my drives. Ignore the tiny drives, those are leftovers from previous partitioning that I never got around to cleaning up. You can see the K drive is the one I'm trying to install onto.

Then I thought maybe it has some kind of issue with installing on a SATA drive, so I tried moving stuff aroudn to stuff it onto the IDE HD I have, and still... same issue.
This is starting to drive me crazy, I'd like to mess with it some before it launches, just to get a feel for it, but even with all the good press it's getting I'm starting to think Microsoft has no idea how to code an installer.
Hi!
I recently changed my default system font, and everything looks really nice now except that with certain numbers, the systray clock's colon is too close to the first minute digit and it looks a little bit off.
I figure there's probably a way to mess with the registry to edit the HH:MM:SS rules to include an extra space or two to fix this, but I wouldn't begin to know where to begin looking for that particular key, nor exactly how I should edit it to make this happen, assuming it is indeed possible.
I am very computer literate, so don't be afraid to use big words, :P
You can tell Windows what to do when you press the power button on your system.
Under XP, Go to the Control Panel, Power Options, and click the Advanced tab. There's a dropdown box that says "When I press the power button on my cpmputer:"
Set that option to shut down and all you have to do is press the button on your box and the system shuts down for you. No Start button needed :D
Nevermind... haha.. I figured it out. When clearing out some older files I deleted the logon screen file that I was using. Now it's back to normal.
Well... this seems to be a simple problem but I see no way to fix it.
When I leave my computer I usually Push WinKey + L to go back to the Welcome screen while not logging off so no one can get on it.
However, lately instead of doing the "Fast User Switch" like it did before, it's "locking" the computer.
In User Accounts both "Use the Welcome screen" and "Enable Fast User Switching" are turned on, so there's really no reason it should be doing this.
Practically it doesn't matter a whole lot cuz either way it needs my password to get back on, but I have a very nicely skinned Welcome screen that I like to see in between sessions on the computer.
It seems to be consistent though, as it does it after re-boots too.
Help plz?
Well I'm no expert at it, but any video drivers you have for on board needed to be in-installed before you install the nVidia ones.
In some cases you will need to go in the BIOS to deactivate the integrated video.
I tried to update drivers yesterday, but neglected to un-install older ones, and that caused me a LOT of problems... I finally got rid of everything nVidia on my computer and started over, which led to my computer having to re-recognize everything from the SM bus (whatever the heck that is) to my optical drives, IDE controllers, etc.
Anyway, I got things seemingly normal again so I go to play one of my favorite games (Call of Duty 2) and notice it sounds weird. After some investigation I found that there was no sound coming through the rear speakers, and since I've had EAX turned on it was understandable it would be a bit muffled with 2 channels missing.
There used to be a program call nForce Control Panel or something like that in the Windows Control Panel. However, in all the hullabaloo that has vanished, and that is how I got my rear speakers working the first time, due to customizable connection options on how I had my speakers plugged in. Now some unrecognized "Multi-Channel Sound Manager" thing has appeared in the WCP, and it tells me how it wants my speakers plugged in, and even following that nothing works.
Going in the stantdard Windows "Sounds and Audio devices" everything seems fine, it's setup to be a 5.1 channel system.
I thought about just re-install ing the nForce drivers, or downloading newer ones again, but upon visiting the Add/Remove list, clicking "remove" on "nVidia nForce …
lol it just got worse. The internet stopped working in there.... aye aye aye... Gonna try resetting modem for that...
Yup, they're both on the WORKGROUP workgroup, at both my home network and the LAN guys. Again, the LAN guys can at least see my computer, but they're not allowed in, but at home, neither computer sees the other.
EDIT:
Ok, going to the Workgroup section under My Network Places, I can now see the "Family" computer showing up. However, it's now saying that \\Family is not accessible and that I may not have permissions to access it, when I know I just turned on file and printer sharing over there. The same thing happens on that computer, I can now see mine listed, but it won't let me access it, same error message.
At the LAN parties, they were. Haven't gotten a chance to check the new home computer though.
Ok, here's the deal:
My computer is wired directly to my DSL modem/wireless router. The family computer is connected wirelessly as well.
The internet is going through both computers just fine, but neither computer is noticing the other one, and we need to share files and a printer between the two of them. Any ideas here?
Also, when I go to LAN parties at friends' houses, (all wired) I see everything just fine on their computers, and they see mine in the "my network" window, but it never lets them access anything when I have turned on filesharing. It always asks for logon name and pass, and even when I give them my admin account info, it still says they don't have persmission to access it. Help plz?
