OK, with super fast broadband arriving, well, super fast, it begs the question what would you use it for?

So go on then, what would you do with such speedy broadband that you couldn't do before?

OK, one more try before this thread gets closed:

Everyone calm down

If you don't like a posting that is in the right place and on topic, fine, don't read it but don't respond with comments basically saying 'I don't like this' and adding nothing of substance to the thread.

If someone posts a comment that is not praising MEPIS or is in some way critical of it or even the original post itself, do not fly off the handle with a rude and aggressive response. Try taking a deep breath, try counting to 10, try ignoring it.

We do not mind, indeed we encourage healthy debate here at DaniWeb. We will not, however, stand for flamebait, nor agressive and rude postings.

Remember there are two sides to every argument, and even in the world of Linux fanboys there are (at least) two opinions on every distro.

If everyone can just try and get along I will be happy. If not, I will come down hard to ensure that overall community happiness is not trodden underfoot.

This is my final warning, as it were, and I will close this thread if the situation continues...

- how about subscription on the blog entries? I'd like to be notified when someone else comments on the blog that I've commented.

Agreed. Also it would be nice to be notified when someone comments to a blog posting of your own, especially helpful when you have a volume of postings stretching back many months.

It would make sense, if to prevent the 'me too' posts apart from anything else. Of course, being a gobby type I have never encountered such a thing :)

Well I would have to say my own Inside Edge, here at DaniWeb and to balance the self-promotion I enjoy reading Right On by our own joeprogrammer very much as it's always thought provoking and interesting stuff.

Away from DaniWeb, Gizmodo is on my must read list as a confirmed gadget addict, as is News From The Lab which is the blog of the security labs staff at Finland based security vendor F-Secure.

Congratulations and welcome to our newest Featured Blogger here at DaniWeb, the superbly interesting author of the Right On - What IT really is blog, the one and only joeprogrammer.

If you've not read it yet, you might want to start as it really is good stuff. Recent postings include such varied subjects as Fedora Legacy Project no more, iPod's copy-protection system brings in federal lawsuits and Make programming as fun as Line Rider.

If you want to get a Featured Blogger badge for yourself, then follow the joeprogrammer example and simply make regular, relevant and interesting posters...

I was fishing to give the guy a chance to explain what he was after and either dig a hole in which to bury himself or build a picture of something other than illegal activity.

There have been times when people use the term 'hacking' to mean something other than the expected - I've had people talk to me about mashups and refer to them as hacks, and indeed there's a whole series of O'Reilly books with a 'hacks' imprint.

Depends what you mean by hack, and what it is you are actually trying to do.

Following on from the success of our first blogging contest here at DaniWeb, we are proud to announce the start of an all new, even better competition with some truly amazing prizes.

If you’ve got something to say about IT, say it in your DaniWeb blog during the months of December and January and you could be in with a chance of winning some fantastic prizes. The winner will be able to choose* an item from a prize pool totaling in excess of $1500 value. Maybe you fancy a 24” widescreen LCD monitor, or how about the latest multi-megapixel compact digital camera, or even an Xbox 360 games console?

Remember, all you have to do to be in with a chance of winning some great prizes is to start blogging.

The winner will be the member whose blog postings attract the most traffic during the life of the competition. There will actually be two winners, one for the blog attracting the most views and one for the blog with the most trackbacks. Each will be able to pick their booty from the grand prize pool. As a special incentive, there will also be a great bonus prize on offer if the winner exceeds 50,000 views or 10,000 trackbacks in total.

How do you get traffic to your blog? You simply ensure that your postings are timely, original, interesting and well written while at the same time promoting them through exploring syndication options, submitting them to services …

Here in the English countryside, we get insects known as 'thrips' during harvesting time. The things are tiny, 1mm or so, little black specs.

Trouble is they are so small that they get everywhere, including inside the LCD screens of our laptops, and desktops for that matter. Damn annoying when you don't suffer from dead pixels bu live ones instead, that wander all over the darn screen.

They die quickly enough, but then it depends where they die and where they stick...

Any idea how to change things so one could get a choice at election day?

The traditional approach is to do something about it yourself: get involved in politics, stand as an independent, make a difference...

The good news

DaniWeb blogs are back in the Google News index, which means increased exposure for both DaniWeb and our team of blog posters (er, that's you folks.)

The bad news

We won't be there for long unless the qulaity of the blogs themselves changes.

The reminder

Can Dani and I remind everyone that DaniWeb blogs are perhaps a little different to some other blogging systems out there.

If you want an outlet to talk about politics, the food you like, how you are feeling today yada yada yada, then go get posting on Blogger - DaniWeb blogs are not for you.

So who are DaniWeb blogs for?

Anyone who wants to talk about technology, in particular technology in the news and put their own spin, add their own opinion, to the story. Any kind of IT that is covered within the forums is also fair game in the blogs.

What we are really looking for here is quality content, thought provoking, well written content.

Not questions, not pleas for help, and not a short cut and paste of a new story from another feed either.

Now that we have, finally, got back into the Google News index with all the exposure that brings to DaniWeb, let's try and stay there. Poor quality, off-topic blogging is not the way forward: and we will be taking a firmer stance in the blogs as a result.

Er, sorry, didn't …

Hi Asma, what part of London are you from, says an honorary Yorkshireman who was born and bred around the cheapest square on the Monopoly board: Old Kent Road. You can take the lad out of Sarf Lunnon, but you can't take Sarf Lunnon out of the lad :cheesy:

Movielad: That's a real shame, I think that whatever external stresses you have got the better of you here. The wolfpack comment was, it seems to me, meant in jest. If I had been around I would have honored your request, but I would have wanted to PM you first to make sure you really wanted to withdraw as you seemed so excited at first. It's a also a real shame that you took the action that you did WRT your blog, which was uncalled for I think. But such is life, and I trust everyone can move on.

Dani: I did mention that I'd be away for a couple of days on business, but was hoping to have at least some connectivity. Unfortunately, my notebook packed up on me while away (battery died a total death) and was unable to get near an Internet Cafe or alternative due to workload. So apologies for my silence, these things always strike at the worse time huh?

Everyone else: I trust that this whole matter hasn't spoiled an otherwise excellent blooging contest, a contest which was designed as a fun thing to encourage more people to blog, and enjoy their blogging. I sincerely hope that this will be the case in spite of the movielad hiccup.

where can i get replies to my messages and where exacly do i post them?

I suggest that you take a look at the DaniWeb How To which Dani has just finished turning into a really useful and easy to understand guide to using DaniWeb. I would also advise that you read the DaniWeb Rules as these will also help you to get the best out of the service we offer.

Spend a few minutes with both the above and I suspect all will become clear...

Be patient :)

Someone will most likely be along soon with a spot on suggestion of where to ask the question. That's the beauty of DaniWeb, with nearly 100,000 members (yep, we are nearly there!) there is always someone in the community who is going to be able to help out. Of course, being a global community everyone is on different time, and what with work and leisure getting in the way (especially over a weekend) an immediate response is not always possible. However, I'm willing to bet it won't take long...

Sorry to let the ego flow, but I've just got back from a day in London at the UK IT Security Journalism Awards 2006.

Somehow I managed to win both the Best Security Feature award and IT Security Journalist of the Year 2006 as well.

To say I am chuffed would be doing the word chuffed a disservice :)
