Most linux distrobutions come with a DHCP client called dhclient. You should be able to type dhclient <ethernet interface> and it will try to recieve a DHCP address from the 'DHCP Server'. The other issue you might have is if you installed a DHCP server on this machine as well …

If you right click on the start menu, then goto properties, there should be a box called 'hide inactive icons' uncheck that and see if this fixes your issue.

What usernames are you refering to, windows usernames, ones in internet explorer, ones in aim? If it's IE you should be able to go into Tools -> Internet options -> Content -> Autocomplete and clear out the saved usernames/etc there and uncheck the autocomplete for username/passwords. Well, this still means that people need broadband, which some people don't have. I was on dialup for over a year, and you wouldn't catch me dead downloading a linux install over that.

This is usually because windows XP uses a different version of the sharing protocol, typically you should be able to load NetBui on all the machines and this allows them to have a common network protocol which should allow them to see each other.
