Last Friday marked the 30th anniversary of one of the most beloved and recognized video games of all time, PAC-MAN (released in Japan by Namco). In celebration Google changed it's logo to resemble the board from the game that marked an era. This tribute to PAC-MAN on Google's home page will end today so if you haven't already done so, go to the classic google.com home page and click the button "Insert Coin" to enjoy a blast from the past.

Hit the "Insert Coin" button a second time and you enjoy the 2-player mode that will take you and a friend back to your childhood video-gaming days of Atari and Commodore 64. Player 1 uses the arrow keys, player 2 uses W A S D (the same keys used in today's PC shooter games). Be sure to crank up the volume and let in that classic, original game music and enjoy!

1) Game publishers need to come up with something new and different, not just sequels to successful games.

2) I'm not if these new figures account for digital delivery of games. Many opt for downloading games through their Valve Steam Account rather than going into a GameStop or Best Buy.

3) Many people are using their "game time" to play social games on the likes of Facebook.

4) Even through the recession people were buying games. Perhaps the bad economy has caught up with the video game market. It will pick back up.

DaniWeb plans to interview Bjarne Stroustrup, the designer and original implementer of C++ and the author of many books on C++. This is truly a treat and rare opportunity for us as a community to talk to the father of C++.

As the new editor-in-chief of DaniWeb's News and Reviews I would like to reach out and involve the entire community and ask for your suggestions. Rather that simply asking Mr. Stroustrup the questions that come to my mind I would like to hear from you what you would like to know. Suggest a specific question or a general topic. Please keep it clean, respectful and relevant [to technology].

At the end of next Wednesday (May 19, 2010) I will review and consider all of your suggestions and come up with a list of questions for Mr. Stroustrup. I really look forward to your feedback and suggestions.

Ken, when it comes down to it I think it comes down to money. True Microsoft has about 63.796% of all the world's money but still this problem will simply cost them too much to fix. As long as the lion share of the market still tolerates and pays for their products they will assume that it is 'good enough'

Star means: it is really hot and has many views and replies
Bullet means: you posted in it
Paper means: it is a regular forum thread
New means: well... new

Rest assured there will be a legend coming soon that will explain these and other symbols.

Folks, we really appreciate the feedback whether it is positive or negative, thanks. Please give the new design a chance and use it thoroughly so your comments offer better advice and not just a knee-jerk reaction to something new. We’re all creatures of habit but the beauty of that is that soon you will all have a new habit :)

The site truly is designed to allow for faster navigation and posting with fewer clicks. You will also have more information and more organized access to it at your fingertips. The new site also loads much faster, no matter which browser you are using.

Forum threads may seem like they take too much vertical space but if you look closer it is only the original post that is formatted that way to allow for ads (we still have to pay the bills here). Also note the “Expand Post” link that allows you to expand the width of the first post and completely hide the advertisement on the side. The rest of the posts in a thread are beautifully formatted and offer better functionality. Voting has been improved. Replying is easier.

When many people think of internet or tech start-ups they automatically think Silicon Valley or California, well I’m here to say that is not true at all. Many great ideas are born from New York, in fact there a very large technology Meetup group [over 13,000 technologists] called NY Tech Meetup that puts on events each month and introduces new companies and ideas to an audience of fellow techies, entrepreneurs and students. At each get-together several companies are selected to give demos and talk about their ideas and products. This May’s event took place at the Haft Auditorium of Fashion Institute of Technology and it featured 7 companies. Here’s a bit about each of them.

GoodCrush

GoodCrush01.jpgGoodCrush founder, Josh Weinstein explained about turning a “missed connection” into a “Good Crush”

GoodCrush lets college students find love without the awkwardness and potential embarrassment of being turned down. Basically, you log onto the site, find your school on the list and create a profile using your school-assigned email address. Then you select up to 5 people you have a crush on. The site then notifies your crush that *someone* has a crush on them [don’t worry Batman, your identity is still safe]. Only if they happen to crush you back will your identities be revealed to one another, then you can Shrek it up and live happily ever after.

Gamers beware. There is an email going around with a subject line that reads something like this: "You Steam will be disabled. Please reactive it." (notice how they cannot even spell "your" properly)

In this email you will find a head banner with the STEAM logo and a couple of links. The link that says "Reactive My Account" takes you to a website that looks exactly like the real steampowered.com site but it is in fact a charlatan, a fake, an imposter. If you click that link you will noticed in the address bar that you are at some South African bank's site [called Bankmed].

This is obviously some poor little hack's attempt to get a few unsuspecting gamers to enter their Steam username and password so he/she steal your identity and use your games, buy more games (on your dime) or worse. If any federalies are reading this you might want to check into that suspicious-looking nerd with no friends in the I.T. department at Bankmed.

Albert Einstein once said "Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen." -- so I don't expect anyone under 18 to have fallen for this trick.

I wonder if anyone has used MonoDevelop and what your thoughts are. I am not a developer but I have tinkered with Visual Studio .NET and I must say it is powerful but it has its flaws. I just heard that MonoDevelop is an alternative IDE designed for C# and other .NET languages and I'm wondering if it is good enough for someone who wants to get their feet wet with some serious development. The nice thing about it is that it is free to download and it now fully supports Windows.

Anybody?
