Your question has a very wide specturm though. Mostly used SE's are Google, Yahoo & MSN.

they had decent PPC program I used to use then I decided to actually use them for searching and its not bad.

I also use alexa for searching as well but that is FAR from small..

I doubt google will be "sold to someone" since it is a public company. Webcrawler is my favorite meta search engine.

Google , MSN & Yahoo are the mother of all & cover most of the content.Many other search engines are derivatives of these
