This thread is from 2012, so a few practical clarifications and steps that add to the points raised by , and .

The visible PageRank metric people referenced years ago is no longer a usable signal (Google removed the public toolbar PageRank in 2016). Today the same problem shows up in subtler forms: private blog networks (PBNs), paid/sponsored link rings, low-value content satellites and automated widget/footer link clusters. Value is judged by editorial context, placement and pattern — not an old PR number.

Quick checklist to spot a suspicious network

  • Many near-identical pages or templates across different domains.
  • Pages with lots of outbound links but thin or irrelevant content.
  • Heavy use of exact-match anchor text and rapid spikes in referring domains.
  • Multiple sites on the same IP/C-class block or identical WHOIS/hosting footprints.
  • Links coming from tiny pages with no real traffic or editorial context.

Practical cleanup and monitoring steps

  • Export all backlinks from Google Search Console and a third-party tool, group by domain, and flag obvious clusters.
  • Attempt removal by contacting site owners; keep records of outreach.
  • If removal fails, prepare a measured disavow (disavow only after removal attempts).
  • Watch Search Console for manual action messages and monitor organic traffic trends after changes.

Long-term approach: stop relying on automated exchanges. Prioritize editorial, content-driven links, diversify anchor text, clearly mark paid links with rel="sponsored" or nofollow/rel="ugc" where appropriate, and run periodic backlink audits. For sites facing a suspected penalty, a professional backlink audit can speed recovery.

Link Farms are those websites which give backlinks to site without considering the niche. For example if someone has a clothes website and he is giving backlinks to automobile, real estate or other unrelated websites then that website is a link farm. Avoid taking links from such websites.
