Is there an advantage to running your e-commerce site on a dedicated IP address? I have been told that if you want to do serious business online and have good Search Engine rankings, you need a dedicated IP and shared hosting is bad.

It's not that shared hosting is bad but a dedicated IP is best. Then you don't have to worry about someone else with the same IP doing something spammy and you getting penalized for it since you're on the same IP. If the host is on their toes, using a shared IP is ok - we have many clients using a shared IP for Ecommerce and they all crank sales. But a dedicated IP is always best.

Basically, if you have your own IP address, something shady that someone else would do on the same IP address wouldn't affect you. This dedicated IP address thing isn't a "must havel" but any pro site will more than likely have their own dedicated IP address though.
