I just purchased a new emachine and tried to put my old hard drive in the new machine as a slave. I left the jumper setting alone on the new drive and eliminated the jumpers on the slave. When the pc finished boot up I did not see a new drive letter as I should have. Why?

The jumper settings won't work the way you have described; you either need to set both for Cable Select (CS), or -- generally preferred -- with the jumper for the Master drive set to Master (MA) and the Slave drive set to, you guessed it, Slave (SL)!

In either configuration, the Master drive should be connected to the end of the cable, and the slave at the center connector.
