Was giving a HPze500 laptop
and now it will not reboot and says no operating system can be found. I get a black screen that says it tries to reboot and then a message "PXE-E61- Media text failure, check cable" shows up and it goes directly to Operating system not found. I already tried going through HP's reboot process but it won't even run the disk. I try using the recovery CD it gets to the first part to start to restore and then spits the disc out! Please Help any ideas I've tried to get a screen to type a command that someone suggested but, don't know how to get the screen to appear to try that? I wanted to surprise my 14 yr daughter with the laptop but, desperate to get working!

Not a tech
please help!
Thank You

Short summary and a clear checklist expanding on and .

The laptop is falling back to network boot because the BIOS can’t find a working boot device, and the recovery disc being ejected suggests either the disc or the optical drive is failing. Start with non-destructive checks before attempting repairs that could lose data.

  • Enter the startup menu/BIOS (watch the screen at power-on for the key prompt; HP models commonly show an Esc menu and F9/F10 options). In Setup, confirm the hard drive is listed and make the internal drive the first boot device. Disable or move network/PXE boot to the bottom of the boot order (this follows ).
  • If the BIOS does not list the hard drive (as suggested), power down, remove battery and AC, open the service hatch and reseat the drive and its connector. Take ESD precautions. If the drive still isn’t detected, the drive or its connector is very likely failed.
  • Test the recovery disc and optical drive: try the disc in another computer. If the disc is readable there, the laptop’s optical drive may be bad; use a USB installer/live Linux on a flash drive instead. If the disc is unreadable on another machine, remake or replace the recovery media.
  • If the hard drive is detected but Windows still won’t boot, boot from install/recovery media and run Startup Repair or use the recovery console to repair the bootloader. If the drive has failed, remove it and connect it to another PC with a SATA-to-USB adapter to recover files before replacing the drive.

Cautions: recovery/repair can overwrite data—recover important files first. If unsure about opening the case, a local shop can test the drive and make a working USB installer.

While in the BIOS, make sure it is recognizing your hard disk drive! Sounds like your hard disk drive is not working anymore.
