Does anyone know if you're running a mother board with PCI express support, is it absolutely necessary that the PSU have a 24-pin power adapter? I'm not sure if this a requirement or just recommended for best performance.

It's a recommendation. All ATX 2.0 motherboards have this 24-pin connector. The extra 4 lines (+3,3V, +5V, +12V and ground) will give you a more stable system, especially if you've a 'heavy duty' computer (OC, SLI, high end processors etc).
