hi,
I was using my PC when Suddendly it shut up, when i tried to power on only green light followed by four red blinks light.
No fan vibration just empty CPU, could it be a power failure or what?.
What is the solution.

A short, focused diagnostics guide (builds on what’s already been suggested by , , and ) to narrow this down without repeating earlier basic steps.

HP models use the power LED blink pattern as a hardware fault code, so first confirm the exact pattern (count long vs short blinks and whether white blinks follow the red ones) and look up the code for the exact model — HP’s support page explains how blink patterns map to component groups and gives the recommended isolation steps. (See HP LED blink documentation.) ()

If the LED pattern doesn’t immediately identify a faulty part, isolate the problem in this order:

  1. Minimal-boot test — power the machine with only PSU, motherboard, CPU, one known-good DIMM, and the CPU cooler/fan connected (no drives, cards, USB devices). This eliminates peripherals as the cause; HP’s docs recommend reducing to a minimum configuration for component isolation. ()

  2. Power-supply checks — verify the mains lead and AC switch, then test the PSU separately (paperclip/jumper + dedicated PSU tester or multimeter measurements of the 3.3V/5V/12V rails). Swapping in a known-good PSU is the fastest way to confirm a PSU fault. Use caution: don’t open the PSU and follow safety guidance when probing voltages. Good PSU-test guides explain safe methods and acceptable voltage tolerances. (tomshardware.com)

  3. If the PSU is good but the system still won’t start (no fan spin, same blink pattern), suspect the motherboard/CPU or a short. Inspect the board for bulging capacitors, burn marks or loose standoffs and double-check the front-panel power switch/header (short the two power pins briefly to rule out a bad case switch).

If those isolation steps don’t resolve it, this is likely a board/VRM/CPU issue that usually requires repair or a replacement part — contact HP support or a local repair shop and give them the exact model plus the blink pattern you observed. ()

Safety notes: avoid opening a PSU, discharge capacitors, ground yourself to prevent ESD, and stop if you’re not comfortable with live-voltage checks.

Could be. Charge your battery first then start it up again. If it does not work your battery might be worn old. You can also use spare battery or use a power cord. Might be also a hard drive failure. I need more infromation.

ok, it is a hp desktop.and i had bought a new cimos battery. i know that fan has the problem or is it possible to replace a new one.when i power on it blinks four times giving out colour red..heat sink does not heat at all.what are the possible solutions to power failure?

sounds like some sort of power failure to me. sound strange... but do you have a lot of USB devices connected to your pc? I have a laptop that does the same thing if I have too much plugged in drawing power through USB on boot

yeah i have several but i dont constantly use them.coz it a desktop.i only use 2port for mouse and flash disk..i will try and replace fan to see if it will work.

Try the following to discharge and reset your PC first.

Please unplug the power cord, then press the power button over 15 seconds do not let go.
Then, connect the power cord and power on the PC again.

Reseat the CPU may help as well.

Hope this helps!

That is to reset the SMC right, Bill? Poster have not come back for 20 days already:S
