Hi. I am a little confuse with the latest versions of I cores. (i3,i5,i7)

Well i know the basic difference of those 3, but it's been almost a year since I've read about them. And i do realize different versions (3rd generation, etc.) of each has been released.

Since the beginning I planned to buy i5 because it is better than i3 and almost the same performance as i7 and i believe that the maximum performance of i7 would not be needed for applications available today.

Can someone give me a short briefing about those versions and what is the latest one?

Thank you. Or a link about this. I am having a hard time searching for this one.
