Short technical summary: photos copied to an iPad via iTunes “Photo Sync” are treated differently from camera shots. The device exposes only the Camera Roll (the DCIM/camera interface) to import tools and services like Dropbox’s camera upload, so albums that were synced from a PC will not appear in AutoPlay/Image Capture or cloud camera uploads. That explains ’s report that Dropbox/sync/iTunes “did nothing” for those non‑camera images.

Safe first actions (do these before any sync/restore):
A full local backup of the iPad should be created and preserved. Avoid allowing iTunes/Finder to auto‑sync photos with a different library before a backup, because a new sync can replace the synced albums. Check whether iCloud Photos or Photo Stream was ever enabled (Settings → Photos) — if so, originals may be available at iCloud.com or via iCloud for Windows.

Practical recovery routes (ordered by likelihood):

  • Originals on the old PC or its backup: restoring those files and re‑syncing to the iPad is the cleanest fix.
  • Extract from a fresh device backup: make a local iTunes/Finder backup and use a reputable backup‑export or device‑browser utility to pull the Photos library or synced albums out of that backup (these tools either read the iTunes backup or access the device’s media area directly).
  • If the images were deleted from the iPad and not just synced away, low‑level recovery tools or professional services may be needed.

Notes and cautions: several posters (for example and ) suggested third‑party recovery software; those tools often target deleted camera‑roll items and may not handle “synced” albums unless they explicitly advertise backup/device browsing and exported synced albums. If the pictures are irreplaceable, preserve the device state and consult a reputable recovery specialist rather than repeatedly syncing or experimenting with unknown utilities.
