"The windows vista home premium key you typed is invalid for activation"
I'm getting this message about 4 - 5 days after re-installing Windows with a valid key at the side of my computer. Wtf is going on? What can I do?

Short expert note (adds context to ’s follow-up and ’s point):
A common reason for the “product key invalid for activation” message after a clean reinstall is a mismatch between the kind of installation media and the kind of license on the machine — preinstalled OEM images, retail ISOs and manufacturer recovery images behave differently, and the Windows edition entered must exactly match the COA/license that was sold with the PC. (support.microsoft.com)
Practical checks and next steps that resolve most cases seen in this thread:
slui.exe 4 # launch phone-activation dialog
cscript %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /dli # short license info
cscript %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /dlv # detailed license info Phone activation (the route used successfully by ) presents a region list and a number; if the automated system cannot complete activation, request transfer to a live activation agent. (support.microsoft.com)
If the COA sticker is damaged or the recovery partition was used, contact the computer maker for factory recovery media or guidance (manufacturer recovery often avoids manual key entry). If the key was purchased separately or from a marketplace, be cautious — keys sold outside authorized channels are often invalid or later blocked. If these steps fail, Microsoft support or the machine OEM can verify entitlement and provide the correct recovery/activation path. (learn.microsoft.com)

Nvr mind I followed the automated phone system and it activated fine...
yeah its because recovery cds/partitions dont prompt the user for thier key - they have thier own keys (e.g dell ones use a dell volume licencing key, but are locked to dell hardware), whereas the stickers are for retail versions. What happened in the past is people used to then sell the keys on the side of pcs, hence now you must ring up
