Short summary and next steps based on the thread: reports IE shows the File Download dialog (“Getting file information”) and then fails (ZIP/MPG fail, images can be saved with Save Target As). asked for exact behavior and suggested reinstalling IE. Reinstalling is a last resort — try the focused checks below first; they fix most “IE can’t download” faults without wiping settings.

Quick, safe checks (do these first)

  • Check proxy/LAN: Tools → Internet Options → Connections → LAN Settings — make sure no unwanted proxy is set.
  • Security and cache: Tools → Internet Options → Security → Internet zone → Custom Level → ensure “File download” is Enabled. Clear Temporary Internet Files and confirm there’s free disk space.
  • If downloads are from HTTPS, make sure Advanced → Security does NOT have “Do not save encrypted pages to disk” checked — that setting prevents IE from creating a temp cache and causes many HTTPS-download failures. (learn.microsoft.com)

Test for extensions and security interference

  • Start IE with no add-ons (iexplore.exe -extoff) or use Tools → Manage Add-ons and disable suspicious BHOs/toolbars.
  • Temporarily disable antivirus/firewall and retry a download to rule out on-access scanning or blocking.
  • Try a different browser on the same PC to confirm whether the problem is IE-only. (support.microsoft.com)

Repair IE components and system files

  • Re-register core IE DLLs (run each line from an elevated Command Prompt or Start→Run):
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 mshtml.dll
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll

Restart and test. If issues persist, run System File Checker to repair missing/corrupt system files:

sfc /scannow

(you may need the Windows installation media). (support.microsoft.com)

Hosts file and last-resort recovery

  • Check/reset the hosts file (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts) to default in case Spybot or malware redirected sites. If the problem began right after running Spybot, consider restoring the system to a restore point created before that change (System Restore). If none of this helps, backing up Favorites and then reinstalling/repairing IE via Add/Remove Windows Components is the final step.

Notes: back up bookmarks/settings and create a restore point before making registry or system changes. If any step reports errors, paste the exact error text into the thread so responders can target the next action.

Legendary stability of IE impressive

What exactly happens? You click on a link to a .zip file and it goes to a "Page cannot be displayed page" or it pops up a window that says "Internet Explorer cannot download the file" ?

If you get the first, then that file doesn't exist. If you get the second, then again, the file may not be there as in the link to that file isn't valid.

Does it happen with everything you try to download?

when i click to download the file download box appears, saying getting the file informationwith the image of paper going into the folder.after a minute or so it says unable to open the internet site either unavailable or not found.this is with zip file and jpeg but can save the j pegs as target.with mpgs windows media says after 5 mins unable to find site check url spellings .bearing in mind everything was perfect until a few days ago when i ran spybot.could spybot of deleted some files or registry.
