I want to setup a network/server for sharing of files between my friends using internet.

Me and my friends should be able to share our files over internet using this network.

I don't want to use yahoo messenger's send file option.
Also it should authenticate the user be he can access the files.

All our systems are based on Windows XP.

XP pro or home?
Are you on a domain?
Do you have a static public IP?
Do you own a domain name?
Does your ISP allow this?
How many users? If >5 you will need Windows Server + CALs

We'll have XP Pro.
I've static IP rest others have dynamic.
I do not own a domain name.
I do not know whether my ISP allows it or no.

There are just about 5 users.

i dont mean your internal IP, i mean is your actual external ip (internet facing - set by your ISP) static or dynamic?

Mine is static IP.

I have checked on a website and the IP address it shows is same as shown in "ipconfig".

My IP address is always same.
So its static i guess ??

yeah thats good. Static, or at least one that doesnt change a lot.

I suppose you could set up a VPN
