described Windows stopping at the “starting up” phase with only the mouse responsive. correctly flagged missing OS/keyboard details and suggested trying a minimal boot. The most important rule here is: protect the data first. Many repair attempts overwrite or modify the disk and can make recovery harder.

If the drive is still accessible, copy your personal files before attempting repairs. Use a bootable rescue environment (a Linux live USB or Windows PE) or remove the drive and attach it to another working PC with a SATA–USB adapter to pull files off. If the disk shows physical failure symptoms (clicking, not detected in BIOS) do not run write-heavy tools — create a sector image of the drive first and work from that image with recovery tools.

Once data is safe, try non-destructive repairs from recovery media: run Startup Repair/WinRE or use System Restore points, then run system file checks. Only run disk-repair utilities like chkdsk after an image exists, because they can change file allocation and complicate recovery. If peripherals aren’t recognized at boot, try other USB ports or a PS/2 keyboard, and verify the drive appears in BIOS (swap cables/ports if it does not).

Quick checklist (priority order):

  • Create bootable rescue media on another computer and attempt file copy to external storage.
  • If the drive is flaky, create a sector image (image first, then attempt recovery).
  • Verify BIOS sees the drive and check SATA/power cables.
  • Use WinRE/installation media for non-destructive repairs after data is secured.
  • If the drive is noisy or SMART reports many reallocated sectors, stop and consult a professional data-recovery service.

This approach preserves recoverable data and avoids common mistakes that make recovery impossible.
