Can anyone help me to insert an animated gif into my email through Lotus Notes? I hate the blasted program - more used to Outlook. We're using R5 here at work.

Thanks!

Good news — as (and later , and ) discovered, you can put an animated GIF into a Notes R5 message body. The tricky part is getting it to animate for recipients, not just in your own compose window. The notes below focus on why animation sometimes fails and practical steps to fix or work around it.

Common causes and quick checks:

  • Send a test message to yourself and to at least one external account (Gmail/Outlook web). If it animates for you but not elsewhere, the recipient client or a mail-server conversion is the issue.
  • Avoid editing or resizing the GIF inside Notes — that can flatten frames. Resize/optimize the GIF in an image editor before inserting.
  • Corporate mail systems or client settings can convert messages to plain text or strip inline images; HTML/MIME delivery preserves animation more reliably. If you suspect server-side conversion, check with your mail admin.
  • Some readers (or clients) show only the first frame or block images; instruct recipients to open the image in a browser or view the message in HTML mode when necessary.

Best-practice checklist before sending:

  • Optimize the GIF for size (fewer frames, smaller dimensions, palette reduction).
  • Insert the original GIF file (do not paste a screenshot or re-save to another format).
  • Test across a few clients and, if animation still fails, attach the GIF as a file or include a link to a hosted version so recipients can open it in a browser.

If problems persist, note the exact symptom (missing image, static first frame, broken link) and which client/version the recipient uses — those details point to server conversion, client blocking, or a file problem.

Considering the sparsity of messages I recieve from colleagues who are stuck with communication via LotusNotes, I have to wonder if that's even POSSIBLE!

I figured it out! While in the body of your message, click on "Create" in the tool bar, choose "Picture". Click on the drop down menu and choose "gif", then find your image and click "Import".

Did I mention I hate Lotus Notes? LOL!

Thanks for posting back, karatelvr :)

it is EASY ! go to INSERT Picture, find where you stored your GIF, and click on OPEN it should appear where ever you left your cursor in the Lotus Notes. The only thing you can not do with Notes verse Outlook, is in Outlook you can insert an audio to play where the reciever opens that specfic email..you can not do that in Lotus Notes. and BTW,I am not an IT tech, but a user...learn by mistakes I say !
