Quick note: covered how to produce the HijackThis log already. To diagnose the "programs keep getting errors" symptom more effectively, post the HijackThis output plus a short fact sheet: Windows edition and Service Pack, any recent installs or updates, the exact error messages (copy full text and error codes), whether errors happen in Safe Mode, and what antivirus/anti‑malware you have running.

Useful diagnostics to run before posting:

  • Check Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) and copy the most recent Application and System error entries that match the times you saw failures.
  • Run System File Checker from an elevated command prompt: sfc /scannow (XP may prompt for the Windows CD).
  • Schedule a disk check: chkdsk /f and reboot to let it run.
  • Test with a clean boot via msconfig (disable non-Microsoft services and startup items) to see if a third‑party service causes the faults.
  • Create a new local user account and try the failing programs there to rule out a profile-specific problem.
  • Run updated on‑demand scanners (full AV + a second opinion scanner) or an offline rescue scan if malware is suspected.

Do not delete HijackThis items blindly; many entries are normal. Back up important files and create a restore point before major repairs. When posting, paste plain text logs (not screenshots) and include the short fact sheet above so helpers can give targeted advice. If supplies the log and exact error text, responders can walk through specific fixes.

After you hit the "do a system scan only" button ... hijackthis will scan your system and display results .... there is a button "save log" under the results ... when you press it .. it'll ask you where to save the log file .... save it where you want to..
