problems with windows xp

Without knowing what laptop it is, no idea at all!

agree with Rik, but in general on any computer a fault like this is either:
1. hardware overheating (fans, processor, motherboard, psu etc)
2. Some program or virus that is deliberately turning off part or all of the machine.

To test for N° 1 put machine in cold place (freezer or fridge) and see if it lasts a bit longer.

To test N° 2 more details etc but check in event manager it may tell you there what the fault is caused by if software;
