I've always had good results with RegSeeker.

That should be: "Unable to modify shared files and folders." I am running Active Directory on a Windows Server 2003 Standard (SP2) machine. I added an external hard drive to hold shared files. I didn't have an problem moving the files from their original location on the server's internal HDD. …

The computers in the office probably have a internal IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.#). Is that correct? You won't be able to connect to them remotely using their internal IP addresses. One option is to find the IP address assigned to your office by the Internet Service Provider. You can then …

Anyone had any luck setting one up? Here's what my setup looks like: DSL Modem --> PIX 501 Firewall --> Switch --> Server (Windows Server 2003) --> Client Systems (XP Pro). The modem has a default IP address of 192.168.0.1. My network is at 192.168.1.#. When I change the IP …

I was able to set up a VPN using a PIX 501 firewall with a Windows Server 2003 machine as the RADIUS server. I am able to establish the VPN connection without problem but when I attempt to connect to the server's network share, I receive an error message stating …

Doesn't sound like a poorly built system. Sounds like you're not using the correct drivers for the wireless device. If it doesn't prompt you for the drivers when you plug it in, then wait for the error messages (meaning it's done attempting auto-install), go to the Device Manager, and install …

Did you make any changes to your system (software or hardware) recently that might have caused the problem? What happened to your XP CD-ROM? You might be able to use your friends but I doubt it will work.

It could be a critical but sporadic problem with your OS, a malfunctioning piece of hardware, or even power fluctuations.

goldeagle2005 pretty much summed up what makes a server different than a client system. If money is an issue, you can use a regular computer as a server. I've seen it done with good results. That said, if you can get a server-class system, do so. As far as an …

My notebook computer does not have integrated wireless. I want to pick up either a USB or PCMCIA reciever. My question is, what standard do most Wi-Fi hotspots use? Most of what I'm seeing for sale is 802.11g. Is that compatible with 802.11a and 802.11b?

Were you previously online or have you never been able to get the system to connect to the Internet? Are you running XP? Is the computer connected directly to the DSL router?

Have you checked to make sure that the correct drivers are installed for the card? Go to the Device Manager and see if there is an error icon next to the sound card.

First off, for the sake of your computer, crack the case more often and give it a good cleaning with some compressed air. Especially important since you leave yours on so much. ;) Also, make sure all your fans are in good working order. If not, replace the one/s that …

Try reinstalling the drivers. If you can't do this (because the computer no longer sees the soundcard itself), shut off and unplug, pull card, plug and restart, power down and unplug again, reinsert card, plug and power on. Of course, if the sound is integrated, then this isn't going to …

Run a virus scan (if you haven't already), then an adware scan (I use Ad-Aware), and finish up with a registry scanner/cleaner (like RegSeeker). Let us know how it turns out.

Please provide more details. When you say it loses sound, do you mean it has sound when you start up and then it goes away? If so, what do you do to get it back? Is there a certain thing you're doing when you lose sound?

What are you trying to do when the message appears? Did your system come with any CD-ROM's for reinstalling software?

What do you mean by "disconnect from the net"? Most DSL connections are always on. Does the problem occur when you close Internet Explorer (or whatever browser you're using)?

IIRC, there are utilites out there that will allow you to boot to a DOS prompt and wipe the drive. For such slow systems, Linux or Win 98 does seem like a better choice then Win 2K.

I've install SP2 probably a couple dozen times and have never lost any files. That said, there are no guarantees. If there is only one chance in a hundred of something bad happening, those are good odds... unless you're that one. It's your call. If you do decide to do …

Does it exhibit this behavior if you boot into Safe Mode? There are the obvious attempted fixes: Scan Disk and a registry cleaner (I use RegSeeker). Also, are you protected against viruses?

I agree with Jon, AD is the way to go. Research it! Work all the bugs out of DNS before trying to install AD. Also, in order to dynamically assign IP addresses, I'd set up DHCP if it's not already. I managed to pull this off with no formal training …

Can you post a link to the Microsoft Article or support document that you're referring to? If we know what registry setting you're talking about, maybe we can help you find it.

Sometimes you are forced to lower the number of display colors when increasing the resolution. That not being the case, try reinstalling your video card drivers.

Either upgrade the system or downgrade the OS. Memory is the main thing to expand but processor speed, drive speed, etc. all have an effect, too.

Sounds like you might have a bad piece of hardware. Unplug, disconnecting non-essentials (CD-ROM drives, sound card if not integrated, etc.), replug, and reboot. If you can get ahold of a video card, try swapping that, too.
