Have you ever used Google Translate?

When you visit Google Translate you will see that the settings are "Auto-detect language" and your native language, Philippino or English. If you pasted some German words into the box it would automatically translate it into your language. The same would happen if you pasted some French words.

If you clicked on the button that reverses the translation direction, then whatever you type in Philippino or English would then be translated into the last language used.

VT follows a similar principle, it translates data and protocols from different systems into the native, and then retranslates the "replies".

Does that overly simplified analogy help? :-)
